Does anyone like Cuban food?

I just can't get into it, for some reason. I tried some "classic" chicken dish with black beans and rice this weekend, and... it didn't do anything for me.

Favorite foods: Korean (BBQ, mmm), Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, GOOD Italian

Runner-ups: Indian, Mexican, Ethiopian

Where did you go? Versailles? Mmmm that place is good. You just can't beat a half chicken swimming in a vat of melted butter. Mmm fried plantains too. Mmmm.

I agree. But you have to remember that it doesn't have such a long history of cuisine as some of your faves.

My personal favorites are Indian and African foods.

that place is awesome. oh man.

Ropa Vieja is very good.

The black beans and rice are great, perhaps you had a bad cook. Love a colada as well. Been to Miami?

I also enjoy the grilled\pressed sandwiches you can find

My only criticism is they have a tendancy to overdo the cilantro

I love it when people make sweeping generalizations.

Are you seriously proposing that ALL Indian food is bad. All of it, every single dish? There's NO chance you would find some Indian food even marginally acceptable? I suppose you've tried them all right?

mmmm versailles...mmm so good...i used to be able to walk there from my apartment...so cheap and so good...and you forgot the sangria(sp?)...mmmm

My girlfriend is half Cuban. We take her Grandfather out to a restaurant in Little Havannah (Miami) all the time called La Cubrena (sp?). Anyway, the food there is outstanding. My favorites so far have been a Salmon dish and a shredded beef dish. The shredded beef has all kinds of onions and red peppers mixed in and it is covered in lime juice...doesn't sound right...but it is sooo awesome. I love black beans and rice as well as plantains (sp?). I've tried the cuban steak and it was decent...but not as flavorful as the other dishes. I also have had Cuban sandwiches (cheese and ham on a grilled bun) that were outstanding.

The shredded beef is the Ropa Vieja I was talking about. The sandwich I had was Turkey, Raspberry preserves, and cream cheese. It was damn good.
