the exact same thing happened to me, I don't know the answer as to why it does it but this is the result of what happened:
so I get that error and i click OK or whatever it was then my aim crashes, not only that my Windows Xp Pro Sp1 crashes after I clicked ok. I rebooted and found it it wouldnt boot anymore. I had to sit there for 3 hours trying to get it to boot. Finally got it to boot, and instead of booting up in about 6-7 bars, it took 40, yes, 40 bars, to boot up and things arent so stable anymore. I'm actually in the process of transferring all my files to another HD and having to reformat in a couple of days after i transfer all my files.
i say just uninstall it and move on. my friend recommended aimutation, i personally havent tried that but it looks like it does everything deadaim and AIM+ can do.
