ummmmm . . . back ON topic . . .

64 bit OS wouldnt help unless there is widespread 64 bit software

um sure it would. XP itself can benefit from a move to 64bit, ask anybody who has the beta installed. Sure, it'll be much better when more 64bit software are installed, but it has to start somewhere.

The benefits are very little. The added VM space is only needed by very specialized apps and most people can't afford enough physical memory to make it worthwhile. There are some speed benefits that come from the added registers and in-core memory controller, but those would still be there if the CPU were 32-bit.

I'm wondering if 32bit OSes were greeted with the same lukewarm enthusiasm back in the day. I can't remember caring one way or another myself.

But the added GPR's won't be available to IA-32 code, so in that sense, AMD-64 will be worthwhile to avarge Joe.

Probably not, I'm sure getting rid of segmented memory addressing was a godsend.

I know, that's why I said "if the CPU were 32-bit" instead of x86. I was just trying to point out that the fact that the arch is 64-bit is largely irrelevant to most people.

Ah, right, should have read it more carefully :)
