Does anyone know if/when Creative is going to come out with a true successor to the SBLive! ?

I have an SBLive! Value...I don't consider the X-Gamer 5.1 much of an upgrade really.
Does anyone know if/when creative will have a new line of soundcards based on a newer chip? Hopefully one that supports A3D 2.0?

I really like A3D 2.0 on my friends SQ2500 and I'd like to see another card make use of it...think there's any chance?

I dont think so. I mean, what could you possibly add? THX? DTS EX, probably be the only real necessity as it is catching on. There really is no big need nor new technology that warrants a new card. I have the SB Live platinum 5.1 and can not think of anything except DTS (which btw, gets decoded externally) that could be added to it. The philips card lets you add another set of speakers (for a total of six, seven if you have a sub)and supports 5.1 as does the new SB cards. Its getting to be that the sound system is bigger than the whole computer!

Im waiting for the AE to reach Europe.
I want a card with better output quality than my Live!
The sound quality aint really all that, its ok for satelites which I use when Im on LAN partys and such, but when Im at home using my real setup, the sound is sorta crappy 🙁

Well creative bought Aureal...it would be nice to see them include A3D 2.0 in their card. Maybe hardware dolby digital decoding? I guess with an 800Mhz CPU it doesn't really matter...

Sunner: Eventually my goal is to wire my PC to a proper reciever and get some real speakers going on....do you find the SBLive! to be a little weak on quality in that area?

There's no market pressure for them to release anything new. Even if they put the same board in boxes labled MP3 or X-Gamer etc for sales there's not a motiviating factor to implement innovative features into new soundcards. They need some serious competition.

I find the SBlive ok sound wise,I use a HI-FI amp & with good cables & speakers,Creative Labs are in no rush to bring out a new card ,I just wish we had more soundcard companies which would then keep Creative on their toes, but at the moment they don`t have any major sound companies that can bother them.

🙂

I remember when the key factor in sound card quality used to be how good the MIDI functionality was. I think, for the most part, most of the major sound cards out there sound basically the same. The only major differences are the software packages that are included with them and which one is better. Creative, whether you like em or not, does have a pretty impressive software package for each of their cards.

they should either revert back to selling only 16-bit ISA sb 16's for cheap, or come out w/ something worthy for that money...

the platinum is a joke...so are all the other mediocre cards under the guise of x-gamer, mp3-moron, and buythis-u're-dumb live!

i'm sure the drive box and their mediocre bundled software costs an extra $250...what a joke. moreover, i should add that EAX is trash.

i'd rather use an adlib gold.

dude... adlib... back in da day... brings back memories of trying to guess the icq and i/o range of the soundcard.

Nortexoid, don`t you think the SBlive value 1024 OEM is good value for money?it seems to many people are now putting sound cards down(especially Creative),they may not be the best sound wise but the sound is still decent & they have been going the longest so they deserve some credit if you don`t like them fine don`t buy their cards, but I for one have never had any problems driver or setting up wise.

🙂

Hopefully they will implement A3D 2.0 into EAX somehow and/or make the thing an open standard. But the probability is 0.0000001% unless some new real competitions appear....

i'm sure people w/ the crappiest cards on the market don't have any problems setting them up or driver wise...that is obviously not my point.

the point is the "laughability" score they achieve w/ overpricing their mediocre cards that everyone seems to purchase...

and their software is mediocre...i don't understand what they're trying to do w/ the platinum series cards?...rip-off their own EMU based line?...no...they're trying to mass market their professional EMU series line as the platinum series, w/ a far worse software bundle however.

excellent marketing move...especially when free/shareware exists that does at elast the same crap they offer...

Mem, the value of that card is OK...comparable cards can be had for less...the value was their flagship soundcard 300 years ago...

<< and their software is mediocre... >>

Well to be honest I agree with that, but that`s probably why I buy OEM ,I don`t use or need the fancy software bundles, anyway if it plays all my games I`m happy since gaming is the most important thing for myself when choosing a sound card.

🙂

Hey nortexoid I actually own an Adlib Gold 1000, but disappointingly, I don't have any Win95/98 drivers for it (found it in a bin to my delight!)

Drivers on the Windows disc only covers the FM chip for music, not digital "wave" audio....
you know anything I don't? 🙂

I'd love to find the "pro" version of the old "Visual Composer" software! 😀

Wow my thread was resurrected after a month 🙂

I'm still curious...is there an Emu10k1 version 2? (Emu10k2? Emu20k1? what will they call it 😀)

I think my next sound card will be either an Accoustic Edge or more likely a TB Santa Cruz...but I'm still curious if/when creative will get competetive.

Noriaki, well, Ill answer your question then, better late than never huh? 🙂

Yes, having just upgraded to a Sonic Fury(Videologic card, exactly the same as the Santa Cruz), I definately find the quality of the Live! to be not so good, the difference is very noticeable with the Fury definately being the better card.
[edit]Changed the above statement a bit to avoid misunderstandings[/edit]

The first thing that struck me was that the line noise was reduced by a very significant amount, with the Live!, if I turned my sub to the max volume, my desk would start shaking just by the noise, now there's very little, definately acceptable.

And sound clairity is better.

Definately one of my better upgrades 🙂

Creative needs a good 24 bit solution and better hardware upsampling/downsampling. Using their marketing and packaging, they should be able to create (after all they're creative 😛) a nice compromise for around two Bens...

Cheers!

Since I got the SB live platinum 5.1 I have noticed a LOT of noise! I have to mute most of the line ins and auxs to keep down the hiss. Its very annoying but the card kicks ass anyway. Most of my connections are digital so I just mute all analog line ins.

<< Wow my thread was resurrected after a month >>

It was only 3 days from my previous poster... I'm no spooge! 😛

I WOULD like to see some kind of major improvement in sound cards, but most people just aren't interested in MIDI music anymore, and just about every attempt ro bring it back (read: directmusic) have failed.

Looks like non-interactive MP3/redbook audio soundtracks are here to stay.
I'll just switch to GigaSampler and be done with it. 😛

I am still heavy into MIDI Bluemax. I futz with em almost everyday. It is a dying art tho. The SB Live series has great MIDI capabilities, Creative just chooses not to elaborate on that fact. MP3s are what most people are interested. Cant even find decent sound fonts anymore.
