It's music . . . where two completely different record tracks (like Britney Spears and the Strokes) are mixed together to make another completly different sound mix.

Evidently its becoming popular in the LA clubs and the local (FOX) news even reported on it.

It sounds interesting . . . anyone know MP3 links . . . I'd like to check it out (I like what little I heard).

That stuff has been pretty common on the net - but for the most part, at least so far, has been very amatuerish and crappy quality.

It looks like there is opportunity for some real creativity (with other artists') dissimilar works.

Evidently, what is out now is mostly "bootlegs" . . . I imagine not paying the original artists might be a problem in selling the mixes (except in clubs).

You're definitely correct - I haven't really come across anything that seemed real professional - though I haven't checked out music lately....

If you find any example tracks let us know!

I think it has something to do with changing the texture/firmness of potatoes...can anyone verify this...?

"Mashing" was a term we used in college to describe...er...encounters with the opposite sex (or the same sex if you're into that).

And here I was, thinking that mixing 2 or more songs was called 'mixing'.

Yes . . . normally two songs are beat mixed as in a transition from one to another with "samples" added here and there . . . "mashing" is mixing two completely dissimilar songs (different beats) - altering them electronically - to make another song - it goes far beyond "mixing".
The example on Fox news (I believe) was 'mashing' Britney Spears with the Strokes.

From the Fox web site:
Mashing

To learn more about "mashing" and the electronic music scene we covered in our "mashing" segment, check out the following nightclubs:

Twine, which showcases cutting-edge DJs from around the world, at the Alterknit on Wednesdays (at the Knitting Factory, 7021 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, 323-463-0204).

The Parlour Club, 7702 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, 323-650-7968. The second Tuesday of each month is "Sockit," a multimedia show with Mount Sims, a dance and DJ collective.

I guess I'll have to take a drive North. :)

I've never heard of it. However, I would expect P. Diddy (or whatever the hell he calls himself now) to come out with an album soon featuring this method, marketed as his own "original" music.

Take any 80's metal band and combine it with some classical music.

Oh wait...Metallica already released the S&M album.
