Don't necessarily need a custom site to get all that. Newegg has the best prices I've seen. Ibuypower.com has the best customization options for both AMD and Intel.

Dell, which recently has had collar-off coupons, such as: "$750 off $1499+ laptop purchase".
Or, brick & mortar stores, several (CompUSA, Office Depot, Circuit City, Best Buy, Staples, etc.) offer configurable Compaq or HP laptops. Watch for the weekly sale prices. These are usually shipped directly from the factory in Taiwan or China, to your address. The sale priced laptops can also often be upgradable; although, memory or HD upgrades may work out to be cheaper by buying them separately from online vendors, such as Newegg.

Dear God I just priced a "gaming" system on VoodooPC and it was over 6000 dollars. Dear God what a ripoff LOL. Don't ever order from them. They wanted 150 dollars for shipping! For Shipping! Monarch wanted 30 dollars for overnight!

I remember the iBuddie line of laptops being fairly configurable. But doing some careful shopping among the units already out in the market should yield a better deal than a custom build. Even the custom configuration shops really have a fairly limilted palette.

Actually, I think they charge $49 for a complete custom build with parts that you choose. The barebones are built for $18.

I would let Monarch build my rig instead of Dell.

You should at least check out http://www.jncs.com/

They are really decent at straightening out any problems that may occur. They will put together whatever you wish and charge you a nominal sum for their efforts. My experiences with them have been very, very, good.

You should be very careful of Dell. They have low base prices, but once you add tax and shipping, you may end up paying more than you need to.

Compaq computers are very reasonably priced. You can customize them over at www.hp.com.

That Monarch site looks horribly overpriced. What's with all the recommendations?

The OP wants a loptop with a 17" screen. These are few enough as it is and most of the mentioned companies either don't really do custom laptops or can't come close to a 17" screen.

I got a system from Monarch, and thought they did a great job. I was able to customize each part, and I knew that I wouldn't run into the problems that would have driven me mad had I assembled myself. They run the system for 3 days, to make sure everything is going smoothly. You can see the price of each component, and see if their price is competitive. For instance, their RAM prices at the time were a bit higher than market, so I got 1 stick from them, and then just got another one from newegg and stuck it in when the computer arrived.
i was very satisfied. dell can be tricky as they skimp on certain parts, then overcharge for basic upgrades.

My biggest problem with Dell is their case, psu, and motherboards. Everything else like cpu, hd, dvd, etc, is standard and can be purchased in retail stores. When I start out building a new rig, the most importance pieces to me are the case, then the mobo, and then the psu, in that order. So Dell is a no-no as far as I'm concerned. Unless the computer only has one specific purpose. A good example would be the rig I'm using right now. It's a compaq and all i use it for is browsing and playing some older games like TFC (yeah, I still play it). I only paid like $50 for it when it was just 2 years old, came with everything originally included (monitor,kb/mouse,os/restore disk, etc), it was worth at least $800 still when I got it, but I would never pay for a new pre-built by any of the biggies....dell/hp/etc.

what about coboc.com. You buy the parts and put it together, DIY laptop. They only have one AMD64 available but since your looking for a 17" Pentium M, they don't have any. Their only 17" is a regular P4. But plenty of 15.4 inch Pentium M models and you put whatever you want in it.

EDIT

The ASUS Z71V looks like it kicks butt for the price 915 chipset with a 6600 mobile card. 15.4 widscreen 1680x1050.
