I like the Audio books section of my public library. I usually check out audiobooks to listen while working on my computers.
Get a wealth of listening for free. Gon't even need to leave the house. Saves on gasoline.

All the time. Have to go pick up a couple books I put on hold today. If I had to buy all the books I read I'd be broke.

I do quite often. We have an online catalog that you can place holds on items, or order them from other libraries. Also you can have them held at the drive thru, so I don't even have to go in if I don't want to. I really like it. I load up on tons of books to read my daughter.

Yours has a drive thru? :D

Yes, and a Panera Bread in the same building. It's very nice, strange since most of my town is sorta run down.

I see your point, but I have bookshelves full of books I've purchased over the years.

The only books I see that were worth keeping are of course reference, trek books that I like to collect and other misc books like my animation art books.

I now get books from my library that I want to read, then have actually bought a few that I think I'd find useful in the future.

Chess books, some poker books, technical books.

There are many books I'll read once and never use again. Many of them are sitting on a shelf taking up space or now donated to the library. They have been somewhat a waste of money.

I really made this post to remind a lot of people to frequent and enjoy your library. Donate
to them too if you think they need it.

My library has an online catalog and is networked with all of the other libraries in the area. They let you check out books online and then they mail them to you for free. They even let you renew your books online. I always have 2 or 3 books checked out at a time. It's very nice to see that not all of my tax dollars are being wasted.

wow, cool. my library does all that, except for mailing the book to you. renewing the books online is real nice, when you're feeling lazy :)

Ours does that, it's very convenient. We can also pick up books 24/7 if you arrange it in advance (they use lockers outside the library). And they subscribe to dozens of online databases I can access from home via my library card number. Our library is fantastic.

I'm generally the same way when it comes to books; I have a bit of a literature fetish, so one of my ways to pass the time is to buy books. Even if it's something I didn't enjoy or won't ever read again, I've never regretted a book purchase.

Libraries are great for research and studying, though. No way would I ever be able--or even want to try--to subscribe to all the various scientific journals I've been having to go through lately.

Have any of you ever taken a nap in a public library? It's actually a good place to do it.

I get all my movies from my library. THey are free which trumps everything. THey do have a sh!tty website though but it interfaces with about 10-15 other libraries in the area that have joined together and transfer materials between them so I have a relatively large pool to take from when searching for something. THey just transfer the movie to my library and then I go pick it up (if I remember).

But I don't ever check out books or CDs or anything else there.

We have a fairly good one here in town--it has good funding. There seems to be some sort of day care thing going on there, though, which kind of sucks imo. It is fairly obvious that whoever is in charge of buying books doesn't have any qualms about allowing her political bent to influence the selection, but that probably happens in every small library.

We live in a small town with 12,000 residents but the library is great. I use it frequently, i go by it every day so if i dont want to by something sometimes they have it for rent

I use my library so much. I get a crazy amount of CDs and rip them all to my computer. Some of them are scratched up though :(

Never rented movies, but some books (Fight Club).

I go to a public university, so does the university library system count?

Seriously though back at home I loved the library...now in nazitown I dare not step foot into public [city] property.
