Does anyone here utilize their public library?

I love it since I get a majority of my movies there now. Anything that is not in my library I can order through my county catalog. Yes I have to wait but if it's something I'm really in a rush to see I just rent it instead.

Question to anyone that works in one that may know: Since when has "White chicks" become educational? Along with Sopranos, sex in the city etc.

Yeah, I do all the time, mostly for new hardcovers I don't want to buy, OOP titles I don't want to fork over an arm & a leg for on Amazon, and music I'm sorta interested in, but not enough to pay for. Big cities totally awesome public library systems. Indy's is impressive, I can't even begin to image what treasures the NYC, Chicago, or LA County libraries have.

In fact, thanks for the reminder, I have a couple books due tomorrow!

I do quite often. We have an online catalog that you can place holds on items, or order them from other libraries. Also you can have them held at the drive thru, so I don't even have to go in if I don't want to. I really like it. I load up on tons of books to read my daughter.

I was at out local library at the end of last school year to help my son with his research, and I ended up driving out to the library by my parents house to finish it.

Our local library is a joke... lol.

The library in the town I grew up in is huge.

I think my dad has more books in his house than the our local library.

One thing I did notice though was that neither of them had a card cataloge anymore.

If it is a joke, it is because your town doesn't budget for it. Public libraries are (generally) on the county or city budget. That is where they get 90+% of their funding. Without it, they can't exactly purchase much.

Media doesn't have to be educational to be at the library. That's just a misconception. There are fiction books at the library too.

My husband and I get movies, books on tape or on CD and just about all our reading material there. Our library even has a nice feature that allows you to list all your favorite living authors and, whenever they put out a new book, you're automatically put on the reserve list for it. I can check online what's new or about to come out and where I am on the reserve list. We love it!

I don't think they're trying to claim the videos they own are educational. My public library system has a very good video/DVD collection as well. I work in the audiovisual/computer section of my university library though, so I get most of my stuff there. (And not all of our videos are educational either.)

The month after I registered for a library card I received a jury duty notice. YMMV.

Go there to read the weekly Time and Newsweek (and sometimes SI), among other things. Can be a zoo sometimes though.

Yep, that's one of the sources many jurisdictions use for jury duty. Though I suspect it was a coincidence in your case as they're not usually that speedy to update their jury rolls.

Ours is full of homeless reading (mainly magazines), sleeping, and tieing up all the internet PC's so no one else can use them (or would want to touch them). I'm glad we pay for a library for them to sleep and read in and for the nice new parks built downtown for them.

Yep. My city has an excellent public library system. The 2nd largest in America after NYC.

most definitely. i have three books checked out right now :)

they have a system where they can search dozens of nearby libraries for books, and get them delivered to your local library for free. then you get an email alert when it arrives.

I owe my appreciation for cinema to my local library. Between the ages of 13-15 I rented a ton of free vhs movies from my library for free, and I still regularly rent free and new release($1) dvds as well. Some notable films that got me hooked on cinema:

2001: A Space Odyssey
Taxi Driver
Goodfellas (Hey, even as a kid you realize that De Niro and Scorsese are the sh1t)
Apocalypse Now (thought it was boring back then..but really liked a few parts of it. It's what happens when you see this stuff too young.)

Dont' get me wrong though, I'm a big book worm too. Just today I came back from the library with Hamlet. It's one of those nice New Folger Library editions with notes on the opposite page so I'm not cursing Shakespeare as I read it. :D
