Does anyone here use a Computer Armoire?

The wife is pestering me to get rid of my desk and wants a Computer Armoire. Click Here to see the type she wants. Does anyone here use one of these and are they practical? Do they give you room? Thanks

It sure looks spiffy, but I would think opening and closing it every time would become too much of a hassle, resulting in it just being left open all the time. Which would result in an even uglier looking room that one with a traditional desk.

If it's going to be in the living room though, there could be some advantages, especially when little kids with sticky fingers or vistors who you don't want seeing the mess a computer desk can be like. Just close it up. I don't like it, but then again, I'm not a refined person with an actual home I could be proud of. 🙂

Heat is the only problem with the enclosed armoire setups... try to get one where you can pull the back out of the cpu enclosure area, that way your case will have full back ventilation 🙂

A friend of mine purchased one of them. He regrets it now, because it's way too awkward when opened up. The bottom compartment usually gets in the way, and the upper compartments are just annoying to open/close every time you want to use the computer.

Only reasons I would get one: it does save space comapred to most desks, if you have kids around the house that shouldn't be near it, or guests for the same reason.

I'm really not all too thrilled about it either, but right now we're cramped for space in a 2 bedroom condo so the computer is in our room. She wants to move it to the living room so that would probably be our best option.

The other option she mentioned was to sell our desktop PC and buy a laptop. I'm not too thrilled about that concept either. Hmmm

Ha i would never get one of those, wuts the point of modding your computer then? Windows no good, and who will see that cool blue LED? LOL

Computer junkie pride!

I bet you're single aren't you? Trust me, I don't want it, but it's either that or get rid of the computer. 🙂

I'm in a similar position as you. Kid #1 is moving out of the "nursery" to make room for Kid #2, thus Kid #1 gets the guest/computer room so my desktop, etc. will be moved to the MBr or dining room.

I've looked at computer amoires a little bit. Most of the ones I've looked at are pretty roomy. There's usually dedicated space for a mid-tower, printer, monitor, keyboard/mouse and a fair amonut of shelving. The only odd ball periheral may be something like a scanner.

Although I'm not real keen on them, the one feature that will be a must if I do get one is fold away or retactable doors. The upper and lower doors are usually pretty big and if they don't fold away or retract, those 30" doors always seem to be in the way.
