Does anyone here play Warhammer 40,000 (Table-top game)?

A coworker has me interested in Warhammer 40,000. He loaned me his Rulebook and Tyrannid Codex.

My thoughts:
1. Lots of rules.
2. Darned expensive figurines
3. More rules.

Still, I think it might be fun. What are your experiences with this game?

Have some friends that used to play but never got into using the figurines; they'd just play with pennies as the pieces. Seemed like it was mostly measuring moves with a tape measure to me.

I never played it but I had a few friends in college that did. Painting the miniature models is fun as hell!

Nobody here actually plays the game? Just browsing through the Warhammer 40K website, it looks like it would cost a few hundred dollars just to build up one complete army with all the units. And there are like eight different armies you can choose from!

Never played it. When I was a kid I had HeroQuest, which is set in the Warhammer universe (though at the time I had no idea what Warhammer was)

A bunch of my friends were obsessed with 40K and spent considerable sums on multiple armies.

I never got into it but I can see the appeal (outside of spending lots and lots of money on little bits of plastic).

I never played it and I'm a super gamer kid. Warhammer seems to stand apart from the usual MTG, DnD, collectible minis, board game crowd. As I understand it, you must own the appropriate miniature to play with it in the game. That is stupid but hey, there are a lot of bored rich kids out there.

I prefer Battletech myself (what the Mechwarrior PC games are based off of). I guess they call it "Classic Battletech" now. That requires minis but they can be cheap and you can proxy them, saying your little locust is your atlas, because it's all really done on the printed out mech sheet. And you can still have all your minis fun in that game.

better peices are pewter i believe.

A friend got me started in this a couple years ago. I am hooked for sure. I found a couple co-worer at work that play and now we all get together for painting or gaming on the weekends. Its a lot of fun with a nice laid back group of people to game with. I have been purchasing all my models off eBay or online websites. Many of which offer a 20-30% discount and free shipping. This has made the game a lot easier on my wallet. Also converting and painting the mdoels is a big part of the game. Its more than just the move and shooting and wining a game for me and my friend. We all enjoy the story behind the different races and armies and enjoy painting the models.

I would suggest that you try a few games with your friend using his models and see if this is the hobby for you.

I read the main rulebook, and while it does have descriptions of the different types of armies, I didn't really find anything that would help me figure out which army I would like to play in terms of describing a playstyle. I'm assuming that there ARE differences in playstyle among the different armies. For example, which army is best at long range bombardment? Which army is best at close-combat assault? Is there something similar to "zerging" where you just have many low-point value units that overwhelm high-point value units?

Maybe I'm being too simplistic here? Do you just pick whichever army looks coolest and tailor it to your style of play?

EDIT: I don't really want to have to buy all the Codexes just to figure out which army I like best.

I played a bit a few years ago. The amount of exacting detail you have to go to depends on who you play with, some groups don't mind if that space marine has the wrong rifle in his hand while some are anal about every little detail. Each army plays differently and the best way to figure out which one fits your style is to go watch a couple games and ask questions. for a zerg-like army go Orks, they are cheap (point-wise) and you field massive numbers. I quit playing WH40K and play mostly Battletech like Titan, the geek in me enjoys that game more.

College, you are doing it wrong.

Shut the fuck up, junior. I painted the models. Who are you to judge, either? All you do is troll a computer forum on the internet.

Much of the Story and playstyle of the army is defined by the Background in the Codex (Army Rulebook). Thats were you will get a sense of the playstyle by reading th army specific rules and looking over the units.

The Tyranid codex your friend loaned you is an example of a zerg or swarm type of army. It has many low point models that you can use to overwhelm your opponent and provide cover for your nastier units that are following behind them.

One I dea would be to go to a local game shop and read through some of the codex there. Also you can look online and at wiki sites or check out the GamesWorkshop website for more information.

A quick discription for the armies that I can think of off the top of my head:

Space Marines - Good Meduim range Fire power, some solid close combat units and good mobility with Transports.

Chaos Space Marines - Good fire power, many close combat units, transports and tanks, but less options than Space Marines in some catagories.

Chaos Daemons - Many good assult units and some decent firepower, large monsterous daemons and quick movement by teleporting on to the game board instead of deploying like normal forces.

Eldar - Agile army with quick movement. a good mix of close combat and ranged fire power, their real strenght is their fast transports and tanks and other units.

Dark Eldar - Good Close combat army which relies on its speed to hit the enemy first. Fast transports but many units not able to stay in a long fight that drags out.

Imperial Guard - Excellent Long range bombardments and many many tanks. Low cost troops provide a large number of models on the board.

Necrons - Good short range to meduim range firepower, has the ability to repair models to save them from dying. Lacking many options for more troops.

Tyranids - Great close combat units with many low cost models. Some ok firepower on the larger models, have many big monster models.

Tau - Good long range firepower with high stranght guns and mobile units. Fast tanks and transports help them stay mobile.

Orks - Good close combat army with many low cost models, lacks useful shooting but makes up for it in amount of models you can use and quick movement.

Thank you!

I played my first game of Warhammer 40K last night. I rather enjoyed it. But, as expected, there were tons of rules that will probably take me a long time to memorize. Terrain was immensely important, as was initial troop placement. The actual gameplay went faster than I expected, although a game that should have only taken 1 hour actually took 3 hours because I kept asking tons of questions.

I dreamt about Tyrannids last night. 😱

There is a store in a mall near me that is always packed. I don't have the time to play, but I can see it is immensley popular.

Necromunda > W40k

I miss that game.

Necromunda ftw! We still play off and on, but haven't gotten a real campaign together in a while. The 8+ player, 2+ table, with 10+ story buildings games were so much fun!
