I tried LARP a couple of times. I thought it was dumb compared to the SCA (which I'm a long-time member of - and a Knight) and preferred paper and dice based games. The SCA has LARP elements, but you actually have to be good at the activities to get recognition out of it. The fighting is a martial art and takes years to get very good.

Did D&D when I was young even though according to my parents and other adults this was the same thing as Satan worhipping and I would burn in hell for me actions, but never stooped so low as throwing ping pong balls at someone shouting "Lightnight bolt"

I did a meetup about 7-8 years back with a local bbs and most of the people there I could really see doing this. One guy was carrying one of those fantasy knives with a 12" blade, several more were pouring sugar packets in their mouth. Most of them were still in character from the bbs as well (LORD, TradeWars and a few other games). There was even a demonstration of sword fighting and martial arts outside in the parking lot. It appeared like I was the only one who did not own a sword or held a black belt.
