Does anyone here not really care for fiction reading all that much?

OK so I'm a technical guy. When I'm not reading engineering books I'm reading factual history books. I find that it fills my life with more pertinant information and I just find it more interesting.

My girlfriend, on the other hand, is still technical (she's a chemist) but she's real big on the fiction reading. But she hates any of the 'best-sellers.' She calls any sort of thriller book 'trash' and constantly reads more intellectual books than what I would read if I were to read fiction (i.e, I would read Clancy). I actually refused to tell her that I started to read Without Remorse over this break. But to be honest the book just doesn't interest me. I fail to see why reading fiction is considered to be as important as it is given the amount of emphasis it has. It seems to be an ivory tower thing and not really useful for those that don't live in one. Granted, I know that if I did read more literature I would be a better writer than I am now, but that's besides the point because I don't write much outside message boards and technical documentation. Even in high school, I just read spark notes to get by my english classes, and never really took any interest in any of the literature that we were assigned to read. I understand that literature has more of a value than most of the thrillers that are sold today, but neither can hold my attention for the amount of time required......

In general I don't read fiction. The exception was the Harry Potter series. I was surprised but I actually enjoyed those.

All fiction for me.

Sci-Fi is where it is at... just finished the 11th Dune book and the 4th Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy book and have now started The Giver, which I should finish in another day.

Not sure what I will move onto after that.. maybe next Hitchhikers book..

I prefer fiction (historical fiction and fantasy, mostly) but I also enjoy non-fiction, especially biographies and stuff about the Mafia.

To put it in prespective, I asked her to recommend one book that I should read over the break. She told me to read Chaim Potok's 'Chosen.' When she told me that I had Clancy's 'Without Remorse' in my hand 🙂

I bought both tho....

So did you buy them without remorse? 😉

I love fiction...people that say otherwise haven't read the right books.

However, that said, I don't read much....I don't have the time.

When I read the Chronicles of Thomas Covenant I did one book non-stop....about 30 hours I think or something. It's addicting.

With a movie you get pre-conceived pictures and sound, with a book it's as limitless as your mind.

There are quite a few people that the tolkien series was ruined a bit by the movies.

May be you should look at fiction that is more or less based on facts. The Da Vinci Code comes to mind. Characters and story are fictional but lot of it is geographically and historically accurate.

I should have compleated college as a history major.

I read history. Just bought, At War At Sea by Ronald H. Spector.
Currently reading, The Chinese In America by Iris Chang.

My GF is tiring of fiction and reading selections from my pile of Civil War books.
