My wife just found out she has a little one and she is 36 weeks pregnant. The doctor says that if it doesn't come out soon they can remove it surgically after she gives birth to the baby (which could be any minute now). The other option is they could try to break it up so it could pass through her urine.

i had one and passed it on my own. Worst pain i have ever experienced in my life. I was ready to use a knife to cut my own kidney out just to get the damned thing.

Our doctor had one and told my wife that it's worse than going through labor.:Q

You should find a new OBGYN. Hannibal Lechter is very intelligent, but his bedside manor is lacking.

Yeah, they usually break the stone up via ultrasonic sound waves and then you urinate the little particles out (realatively little, they still hurt).

ive had them on 3 occasions. last time it wouldnt pass on its own, so they ran a 2 ft length of blue tubing from my Johnson to the kidney...had to have that there for a full week.
Not fun.

I have had two in the past 4 years. The pain when it passed wasn't too bad, but the pain of it sitting in my kidney, or wherever it lives was unbearable. I thought I was going to pass out from the pain.

The last time, I was at home, everything was fine one minute, then within the span of 5 minutes my lower right back was on fire, I was sweating, could barely stand up, started throwing up, and went to the emergency room. They stuck an IV in me, and I was pain free... :)

The first time it happened I was in a hotel in Washington DC, that sucked because I had nowehre to go and had to just bite the bullet and deal with the pain.

But actually passing it was nothing compared to that pain.

I've seen two surgeries (one man and one woman) where a plastic stint was insterted. Watching the guy was very painful for obvious reasons.

Interesting fact - did you know that excessive use of antacids can be a potential cause of kidney stones because of the added calicum. I found that out and thought it was pretty interesting.

IIRC, they're calcium deposits inside the kidney.

I thought excessive soy consumption can also cause a problem.

What determines whether you have it broken up, removed, or pass naturally?

I assume that any stone can be removed without pain right? So why are so many people passing it? Are you guys just cheap and don't want to pay for the surgery or the ultrasonic treatment? I can't imagine the latter being that expensive.

Very good advice.

My dad had them a long time ago and I sure don't want one myself.
