Hard to generalize about it, there's a large range of severity and symptoms. and, like most autoimmune diseases, it's poorly understood.

i know a guy who has it, though i dont know a lot about it. when he was first diagnosed he had to watch his diet carefully for sodium intake and maybe a couple of other things. after a few years he pretty much stopped paying much attention to it (hes never been an unhealthy eater anyway) and as far as i know he's been doing pretty well.

my mother has a friend who was diagnosed with it many years ago and she basically stays in her apartment in NYC because she's got a high risk of getting infected. :-/

The fail at House references is funny.

I'm not too familiar with it, but good luck to your Mother, John!

John, this pretty much sums it up. It can be mostly arthritis symptoms, to fatal with internal organs being involved. My wife has been in remission once in 34 years, lasted for three years, and then back to the same symptoms. The doctors have no idea what causes it, or what makes it go away. Good diet and LESS stress seems to help the most in addition to her meds. Good luck to you and your mom.

my roomates sister has it, and basically, what everyone else already said (minus the House references) is true. Her symptoms have changed over time to affect different things, including joint pain, eyesight, memory, organs...it's not a fun disease but in most cases it is very managable and not life threatening. Find a good doc, and try different meds until you get one that works well.

Good luck, best wishes to you and yours.

What kind of lupus? I know someone very well who has sebaceous lupus. Recently negative for systemic.

It's caused some bumps on her skin since that's where she has it, usually due to overexposure to the sun. She takes precautions like sunscreen and such. Beyond that, it hasn't really affected her.

Michael Jackson had it...and this company that I am heavily invested in has a drug in phase 3 trial, other than that, I don't know much about it. Phase 3 result should out by 7/20, if FDA approve it, your mom might be using this new drug soon...

A friend from high school has it. I'm not sure if it's reoccurring, but we did go visit her in the hospital, and she had a urine bag hooked up to her.

We thought my ex-wife had it for a while, but it turned out to be Bi-Polar Disorder. Not sure which would have been better.

Anyway, hope everything turns out ok for your Mom!

My niece has it, my sister, her mother died from it. It is a lot more controllable these days.

My sister was diagnosed at 13 and died at 28 (1968). My niece is in her mid forties and lives a normal lifestyle and will probably out live us all.
