Does anyone here have a Shih-Tzu?

SAWYER

I saw an ad for a full blood with papers 8 month old boy for 150. The lady has a new job and doesn't have time for him. I called and low balled 50 bucks and she said yes. She brought him over today(come to find out she lives one block away) and he was adorable.

Are they good dogs? My only concern is my cat, I hope they get along. I am supposed to get him at 4 today.

My girlfriend has one... they are a dumb breed and he's sure living up to it. Fun little dog though...

They paid like 600 for it or something... ridiculous

Any advertised "pure breed" dog that's being sold for $150 is not a quality animal.

forget about pure bred, i had a cute shin tzu mix and he's wonderful. always come when i call him and never barks.

Well I am not wanting a show dog, just a replacement for my kid's Yorkie that died. I have had muts before so that's not an issue. The lady is a teacher and has a second job and no time for the dog. How can I tell if the papers are legit?

My little sister had two for a long time, they were very good for small dogs. Even tempered with children and easy to get along with. They have some sort of problem with a rash if you don't keep them properly groomed, but I don't remember the specifics.

My main concern wouldn't be the legitimacy of the papers, but the quality of the actual animal. Anyone selling dogs that cheap is not legitimate breeder. The animal could be inbreed, come from a bitch that is not rested between litters, etc...

Personally I would get a dog from a source you can trust rather than some clown trying to make a buck by pimping out their pet.

i had two, horribly neurotic dogs that never would learn proper potty training (apparently it's a problem with that breed). the other dog potty trained immediately so i don't know what the shih tzus problem was.

shih-tzus are GREAT dogs. my dad has 2 and they are very fun, mild-tempered and well-behaved. never had any problems with rashes... so i dunno what that other guy is talking about. playful loyal puppies. great great animal

She isn't a breeder. She bought the dog but took on a second job and has no time for him

You places your bets, you takes your chances.

😕

I'm just saying I would never take a random dog in without prior knowledge about its behavior and temperament. The person he's getting the dog from doesn't seem to be a trustworthy source imo.

They're usually very high strung (they bark a lot), and tend to be protective. We've owned two so far. They're not good with kids (anybody that the dog feels it can dominate it will be nippy with). They usually adopt one person in the house as their "go to" person. With our current dog, it's my wife. With my old dog, it was me.

They're very snuggly dogs and like to be pampered. Their hair is very close to human hair, so it's anti-allergenic. They don't shed much, but tend to get matted if you don't brush them once a week. You should also keep the hair around their anus trimmed to prevent nasty messes.

If you let it's hair grow out, keep the hair out of it's eyes with a hair clip, or just trim it and give it bangs 🙂 .

They're great companion dogs, and tend to be very intelligent and empathetic. You got a very good deal at $50- $200-$400 is usually on the cheap side for that breed. Just be sure you present yourself as the alpha of the house or it's going to pwn you 🙂

My Shih Tzu is lazy and sleeps most of the day. But it has some huge advantages. He will bark only if someone knocks on the door or if someone is talking loudly outside when it is dark out. He barks only 2-3 times and then gives up. He tries out real quick, so walking him only takes 2, 10 minute sessions a day. Mine doesn't care for cats, large dogs, small dogs, and runs away from little kids.

Shih tzu requires a lot of work on grooming. The hair on his feet get matted just taking short walks around the house.

But really, $50? Better make sure the shots are up to date and see if the seller will allow you to take him to a vet before the purchase is final.

Shih Tzus are much nicer dogs than Yorkies, in my experience. Fearless and so more friendly, more self-assured and so less yappy. Social dogs that are less likely to snap and nip than Yorkies. If you had to go with a small dog, I'd say that breed is one of the best. I'm all about large dogs though.

[edit] I'd give Fritzo more credence than me. I'm going off observation knowing a dozen or so of these dogs. If you've owned one you have a better perspective.

I got him and he is getting used to the place, he seems like a sweet dog. My cat isn't too pleased and has not taken her eyes off him
