We got a proposal for a company to come in and set up a SharePoint system. We have no experience with SharePoint but plenty of NT sysadmin experience. All the thing needs to do is two things: (1) let people easily look up some relatively static information, charts, and drawings, and (2) a message board.

The price for setting the thing up was very high and I'm wondering if it's really that complicated. Any inputs appreciated.

no idea but I'm interested in it myself, still cant see what the whole point of it is
you can also just use sharepoint services which is free if you own a win2003 license

We had a server running it but it got taken down because we needed the hardware. Vendor set it up and I wasn't really paying attention but it looked relatively simple. Very web-based and I think he said that everything was customizeable via xml sheets but I'm not positive. If I had known there was a quiz I would have paid more attention :). Obviously, this isn't going to help your decision.

Can you get an evaluation and see how hard it is setting it up at that point?

Yeah, we could get an eval version but I'm hoping to hear from people who have actually done it. You know Microsoft always makes it look easy! :)

The basics are very simple to use. Can get hairy when you try to make it do everything (like you will want to after you find out all it can do)
