I'm planning on getting a second one for myself.

It's going to be my server, where the homepage and mailservers etc. resides.

My working machine will then be for my use only, istead of having it all run from the same machine as I have now (24/7).

I think quite a lot of peoble have similar setups. A working machine and a server machine that handles other stuff like webserving, sending/receiving mail, and handling big downloads.

I have four and I live alone. They are all up and running.

At one time they all had a specific purpose. I'm sure that two would serve my purposes now but I can't bear to part with them.

Nakanaka:

I have a static IP (almost, it has changed once in two years).

It's possible to host your webpages of your own PC with a dynamic IP, but it does need some more work. One of my friends is doing it, but I'm not sure exactly how.

Here in Denmark its not that rare to host your own website of your computer. I know a lot of peoble doing it.

I run an FTP server on my server plus I push out updates (ie virus definitions and Win 2k service packs) through my server. I also host a Counter Strike server on it.

When I am at home I have 7 functional computers. At any time there are at least 5 of those are running. I also have 2 others that I am working on. They range from a file server, to workstations, and a laptop. I am looking at getting an 8th soon. I need it to setup 2000 server so I can learn it better.

ya but nightowl what do you need them all for? specificlly what do they do??

The only reason I could see myself getting a second computer would be to do FTP, mail and internet on a very non cluttered enviroment. plus i could run dnet 24/7

It is very possible to host your own website. I do it from my @home connection, though @home tends to frown upon those who run servers of any kind. First on their hit list is email servers - especially in wake of Red Alert. Individuals who run servers tend to have less secure servers than businesses and corporations, so they are prime targets for virii.

To host your own website or FTP, it helps to have a DNS service that points your url to your current IP, and client software running on your server that communicates IP changes to your DNS service. For a DNS service, try www.ZoneEdit.com.

For more information on personal webservers, see DSL Webserver.

Craig

at the house I have 6 or 7(when I bring a notebook home).
check my sig...it has the 4 in my computer room.
one is used for web-surf email.
one is used to fool with linux/watch tv when I am "working"
one is used for development (dual 800, with 1.5 gigs ram...etc, etc.)
and the last one in the room is used for testing apps on win 95.

my cousin, who lives with me, has one in his room.
and finally I have one downstairs when I am too lazy to go to "mission control".
check out my sig.

I think some of us end up with more than 1 PC because we suffer from "UpGradeism", a non-fatal but costly affliction. I have to do something with my olde mobos, HDDs, etc; so I build another PC...&so on!

I have three and am the only user. Why? System redundancy on two . . . they are duplicates but have slightly different functions. Having two allows me to operate a LAN and be better able to assist clients with networking problems.

The third machine is my laptop which is used on the road.

Anyway, by dividing functions, there really are no stability issues at all. So there is nothing to be gained by using W2K or XP.
