Does anyone have Comcast Powerboost yet?

A Comcast installer is coming here later today to upgrade our download speed from 4Mb to 6Mb and add Powerboost feature.

What are your thoughts on Powerboost?

An installer is coming to upgrade your speed? All I had to do was powercycle my modem and make sure the one we bought was a DOCSIS 2.0 modem.

I power cycled my network and for the first week it seemed like the speed boost had kicked in, back now my speeds actually seem like they are slower than ever.

Yes. They charged $19.99 for installation fee. We used to only have internet and no cable TV.

Is a cable TV service required to have high speed internet? Internet is $42.99 plus $9.99 for basic cable 1 package.

I got this for free when they came to fix my cable.. went from 8Mbps to about 16Mbps burst now.

2000KB on cable is pretty sweet.

Damn't! You're not required to have basic cable TV to have 6Mb and powerboost. I guess Comcast will need to come over again and remove the cable TV service. I better not be charged another installation fee.

EDIT: Nevermind. I just talked with a Comcast rep and they said it's cheaper if you have internet ($42.95) with basic cable TV ($9.99) because you get a discount for your internet. Basically, it looks like this:

HSI + Basic cable = $52.94

HSI ONLY = $59.95

isn't basic cable already included in the line if you have cable internet? you can probably cancel it and still split the basic cable to your tv.

It was actually cheaper for me to get basic + internet, you might want to check pricing before you have them do that.

And yes, I've been seeing 16 meg bursts for months now.

Do you really get to use that speed? For how long? For what aps?

I just cancelled Comcast to switch over to SBC DSL and I didn't notice any gains from the Powerboost feature.

Powerboost only works when the file is greater than 10MB. It's a useless feature for daily web surfing. It's awesome for downloads though. (BitTorrent 😉)

However, you're usually limited by the server's upload speeds, at least that's in my experience so far.

Oh, so I guess I have been getting them to. I have seen up to 16mb bursts in downloads etc, and just thought it was screwy.

BTW, what is power cycling? Unplugging and replugging your modem?

Ya it works, have had it for a while, it works best on larger files, so speed tests don't show the full capability... but...

Last Result:
Download Speed: 11288 kbps (1411 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 357 kbps (44.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
