I have a fuji s602z which is not very portable and all the features can now be found in much more compact cameras. I just found the Olympus C 740 which seems like a pretty sweet little camera (10x zoom, manual or auto)

any other recommendations?

I guess it depends on what you consider portable. I have a Canon A80 and a Canon 350D, and I would consider both to be portable.

the a80 is definately portable but the 350d is a little too big. i am going to kenya in a few months and need a portable camera for convenience and safety (not easily stolen). a powerful zoom is definately one of the first features i look at in a camera (besides price)

Ahh, for a trip like that I can understand. I took my A80 all around Europe last year, and I found it to be just about the right size. I could even keep it in my pocket when necessary.

Are you looking for optical/digital zoom? 10x optical might be difficult in such a small package I think. I have an obvious affinity for anything Canon, so you know what I would suggest :)

i generally dismiss the digital zoom and just look at optical. the olympus that i linked above actually has 10x optical which seems pretty amazing considering the size. i think i need to go to a store and get a feel for the current sizes that are currently available. i took my s602z to yellowstone and it was too cumbersome. i have a fanny pack that carries the camera, battery recharger, and a 20gig hd that i got so i dont need a ton of memory cards. that hd is the best purchase i made relating to my camera.

How much did you pay for that 20 gig hd?

i got it for $150 at radio shack a couple of years ago which was around the same price for a 256mb smart media card at the time. i think mine is made by imagic but i would imagine iomega makes them too. one of the great features is that it accepts 6 different types of memory cards.
