does anyone have a Intel Core i3-2100 here

I am interested in upgrading one of my computers to a Intel Core i3-2100. This computer isn't used for gaming so a dual core would be okay. If anyone has a i3 2100 then please can you tell me if the stock fan is fairly quiet? I am replacing my Phenom II processors because I was never happy with the noisy stock fans. I will be replacing my amd phenom ii x4 955 with either a amd bulldozer or something from the intel i5 range so I am waiting to see the performance of the amd bulldozer before I decide.

I'll say this: the stock fan that comes with the i5-2400 (95W TDP CPU) is reeeeallllly quiet. And it's so, so much better than the stock AM3 fan which is loud as hell.

Hmm. If you don't do gaming, you won't see any gains going from the PhII X4 to an i3 2100. The stock fan on the i3 is fairly quiet, but a good heatpipe tower cooler for your PhII can make it utterly silent at stock speeds.

For your gaming PC, definitely i5-2500k. Possibly BD, but I don't expect BD to come out and be able to keep up with a properly set up 2500k rig (~4.4ghz or so). Stock 2500k fan is meh though, get a quality tower heatpipe cooler for it.

I am building one for a buddy this weekend with the stock sink and fan so I will let you know! I thought my stock fan that came with my 2500k wasn't really loud. It sucks at cooling though 😛

The computer I built for my grandfather has an i3-2100 with the stock fan and all he (and grandma) has said about it is that it's really quiet. Maybe I should add that the only other fan is a 120mm case fan.

Wow! Fan noise is the reason for buying a new cpu - which of course means a new motherboard too? Might I suggest just replacing the CPU cooler?

I already have an intel motherboard which supports socket 1155 so just need the cpu to go with it and I will sell my dual core amd motherboard and cpu. My intel motherboard didn't cost me anything because a friend was upgrading so I had it at mates rates ie cheap.

thanks everyone for all the help and advice. 🙂

I have owned hardly any Intel processors because I have always owned AMD going right back to my first computer which had a mega fast (lol) amd 386 dx 40mhz.

The only Intel processor I have EVER owned was the Intel pentium 75mhz 🙂

Stock fans are quiet as long as you enable a fan profile in BIOS. Intel fans are usually a hair quieter than AMD fans because the heatsink design allows for larger diameter fans. Just make sure you install the Intel heatsink properly. Many don't know how, and end up either damaging the push pins or improperly seating the heatsink resulting in high temperatures.

thanks for the info 🙂

I have a Core i3 2100t, which is a lower wattage version of the 2100, and the fan is awfully noisy for me. I don't know if it's a bad setting on my motherboard that is causing it to go at full blast (the BIOS is set to auto), but it's not pleasing.

I bought a new cooler for it, but the case doesn't have a heatsink cutout, so I've been a bit lazy on tearing the whole thing apart to put the new cooler in. :\

I think the bios does have a ton to do with it. For instance my freezer 13 pro that I just put on my 2500k, has a speed ranging from 300 to 1300 rpm it says on the box. However, the bios on my asrock pro 3-m will only adjust it by 300 rpm! So at setting 1 it is around 1000 rpm, and at setting 9 it is 1300...and I cannot adjust it with speedfan either for some reason it won't work. Can you plug the cpu fan to one of the chassis fan headers, or do motherboards still have the sensor that keeps the board from booting if nothing is on the cpu fan header?

take a look at the sandy bridge pentiums. it's not that much difference from i3-2100 other than marketing and you save some $$ that can go in to future upgrades

That's not true, the i3 has hyperthreading which the Pentium lacks. For dual cores that can mean a huge difference in system performance and longevity.

That would be an issue with the BIOS.

Depends on the BIOS. I've seen ones where it REQUIRED a working fan plugged in to the CPU fan header, but plenty that do not.

Yes. My stock fan is quiet. But I upgraded recently just to see if I could make it cooler. Didnt do much aside from add noise. Will try using the auto speed settings to improve that.

When playing a movie or listening to music, I can't hear the fan. I only hear the CPU fan when nothing is playing, and the room is quiet. I don't think you'll be disappointed. If so, you can always change out the stock cooler to fanless or 120mm fan.

I have my intel core i3 2120 installed now and yes it's a bit noisy when your playing a game or something like that but it's not too bad. 🙂

My buddy finally got his up and going. Had a bad motherboard hinder us last weekend. At any rate, I never found the fan loud, but it was for sure very audible at full speed. However, once the quiet profile was enabled in the bios it was still audible but just barely. The really impressive part was the 26 watts @ idle, and 65 watts under prime 95! Temps @ idle were in the low 40's so I was afraid it would run hot, but it only got up to 60 on prime95. Not having the two extra cores like my 2500k must really help the temps. I can't see a need to go with aftermarket cooling on this cpu myself
