How's the reception? I have a Dell Inspiron with a Orinoco WiFi PC Card, and I'm wondering if the signal strength will be worse if I get a built in mini-PCI card.

Mine works pretty well, as usual it matters how close you are to the AP.

In my apartment it works great because its a small area. At school, it generally works as well as for those who have the cards. Your best bet is to find someone with a Dell built in and try it out.

the back of the LCD has the antenna.

Our library has them, the reception isn't that good.

I get excellent reception with my Dell TrueMobile 1150 PCMCIA WiFi card (rebadged Orinoco Gold) on my Compaq Presario 1500T. When I bought my 1500T (late September 2002) they had a promotion where they were giving away a FREE WiFi antenna with any 1500T purchase, I mailed off my $12.95 shipping check and rebate form, waiting to receive the WiFi antenna.

IF the WiFi antenna gets better reception then I'll keep it since it integrates nicely onto the LCD's display instead of poking out of my one & only PCMCIA slot (I really have no other use for this slot anyhow).

Our library got the Latitude with built-in wireless. The reception is decent, but not that great.

I just walked into a room and the signal dropped to 25% of maximum potential (2 Mbps or something like that). I walked downstairs one floor down (about 15~20 feet below the WAP, although not directly below, I lost signal completely). But then it is an old-school building and reception for cell phone and everything aren't great. But I was quite struck when I lost so much signal by walking into a room, which, btw, has glass doors and I can face the WAP almost directly.
