Does anyone hate hearing the new Metallica song as much as I do?

I'm Metallica's #1 fan. I have been listening to their music since '88, and have played their music on guitar since I was 14. I know every song note for note. I wait patiently for each album to be released, and I have accepted all of their musical changes. Until now. No matter what Metallica's style, I could always get into it, as the songs were great. You can tell they put alot of work into their music. But this album doesn't have that feel. And they admit it.

In this month's Guitar World magazine (or one of the guitar magazine) they admit to writing the album on the fly. James said many times he'd want to go back and resing a line, but decided that the initial "feel" of the moment was more important than doing it over again to get it right. Bob Rock admitted that he would give James 15 minutes to write the lyrics to an entire song. And it shows!

I think bands need to be mindful of "overproducing" their music. You can polish it so much that it loses the edge or feel of the song. But Metallica never had a problem with that. I love Metallica's finely-tuned sound, where every note is on place, and every 16th note speed picking is right on beat. And I never felt that the perfection ruined the feel of the songs. I still get pumped up by a good Metallica song. So I'm not sure why they felt the need to underproduce this one. I think they felt a need to compete with the crappy sounding bands of today who are so popular.

It's a sad day because, at 40-years-old, I don't think they have it in them for the next CD. Somehow I doubt at 45, they'll meet my expectations of a good Metallica CD.

I agree with almost everything.....but you are not dead @ 40 and they are trying to prove that.

Frantic is ok but that St Anger song drives me crazy it's just annoying as hell.

Either way it's just not like old metallica but the band never really had much talent they were just a one trick pony.

I think the new album is pretty good for listening while playing, say, UT2k3. For ordinary listening...it's mediocre at best, not worth the cost of CD its printed on at worst.

That's fine, if you just like your music to be loud, fast, and heavy. The music and lyrics are very simple, the tone of the instruments is dull, the guitars are sometimes out of tune, James sings off-key. If you want more dynamic sounding music, St. Anger doesn't provide it. I know they're not going to play music like Justice again, but through all their musical changes, they've kept one thing constant, quality. This album is sure fast, but it seems the quality just isn't there.

I have never owned a Metallica album, so I can't compare Old vs New, but from what I've heard(Frantic) it sounds good, at least Frantic. Won't be buying it though.

Dave Mustaine has such an awful voice. The first time I heard Megadeth, I couldn't stop laughing. Then I realized that's what the guy actually sounds like
