Personally, I don't see any benefit in using racial slurs or calling someone gay as trash talk, there's plenty of better ways. Still, just the fact that it makes wussy politically correct folks upset might be a good enough reason to start doing it.
One of the reasons I stopped playing CS was due to the immature, ignorant, racist idiots that I played with daily. I literally believe that some people became more racist after playing with some other very racist people. It's not just trash talking, they would talk about doing things to various ethnic groups of people (probably joking, still disturbing) that just became so redundant and annoying that I left the clan that I founded and blocked most of them.

It's all the 13 year olds that turn me off from gaming. Not only racism, but all the swearing and threatening, etc. Not that I'm scared of them in the least but it's just depressing to see what a mess it's turned into.
I voted the first option, even though I play GW a lot; because one of the reasons I don't want to pay to play subscription based games is I'm not going to actually pay money to associate with the 10% or so of gamers that are racist/sexist/ or just asses in general.

Its tiresome. Its not just the racist and "gay" remarks, but the general level of asshattery going on. CS is the worst...after playing some DoD and seeing it wasn't anywhere near as bad there I quickly moved on to that game. In small doses or with just a few morons doing it its annoying but tolerable...but when over %50 of the server is calling eachother racist slurs, and the admins basically sanction or join in on the behavior it just isn't worth while
Maybe I'm giving DoD:S more credit then it deserves, or maybe the servers I've played on have just been unusaully well admined but that crap usually results in a quick ban by an admin I didn't even know was there. And its rare that it happens at all.
As for trash talk...well, I only play team games to direct rivalry is usually a distant teritary objective. But I don't partake in it much myself, I usually just shoot them while they are typing. You want to chat? Go fire up mIRC.
My advice is to just find some good servers and stick with them. There's usually at least a few well admined ones by older players that JUST WANT YOU TO PLAY THE GAME.

I was pwning in the original Desert Combat mod once, and I happened to be using the black soldier skin that day. I think I just randomly chose a skin. When the other team finally killed me, they started shouting racial slurs at me. Unfortunately, I'm Asian so their racial slurs didn't really hit home for me.

It doesn't bother me bother me because I know they are just being a-holes and it is more satisfying to whoop on them.
However, I have to be careful with it around my kids to make sure they don't hear these idiots. I don't really think it is something I want to expose them to until they are older.
