google maps says 4 hours 18 min from the ellipse in dc to city hall in nyc, so 4 hours doesn't seem that unreasonable. avg 56.25 mph? obviously certain times that's impossible, but depending on when you leave, not so bad

I used it once, but only to go from Raleigh, NC to Charlotte, NC. The experience was pleasant..I would do it again.

I used to live in Connecticut and took Amtrak to DC from Penn Station a few times. Nothing special. Take a plane, you won't miss anything.

As others have said, the NE Corridor is a fairly consistent and reliable line. It is a lot more comfortable and less hassle than flying, I just wish it was also a lot cheaper than flying, but it's not.

I took it from Baltimore to Chicago. The train I was supposed to have been on the previous day derailed near Silver Springs (luckily my ride decided the weather was too nasty to take me to the station--good thinking, apparently). So they bussed us up to Harrisburg, PA, and then I got on the train from there. The train broke down twice and had to have a competing railroad send an engine to pull us up some hill or another.
But it was a fun trip, talked with a bunch of people and hung out in the smoking car most of the time.
