Thusday morning, I just got back from 3 months (working) in Hawaii (looks like I will spend EVERY Winter from now on working in Hawaii) and don't have the time or energy to work on my taxes.

I am simply filing form 4868 - Automatic Extension of Time to File - so I don't have to worry about it 'till August 15. Since I can estimate - and pay - what I owe (to within $1000) there is no penalty for this extension.

Anyone else postpone the April 15 stress?

If my accountant doesn't have my taxes ready by tomorrow I will. Fortunately because I have to file with the Massachusetts office I don't have to file till the 16th. If it had to be filed today I'd probably have to file an extension. :/

I did exactly what you did. Did it over the phone w/the toll-free number, too boot. :) I'll pay what I owe in August. No penalities, no interest, no problems. I need all my pennies right now...Uncle Sammy can waity-wait. :p

My accountant said my taxes should be done by 5:00 PM today, she had to correct my wife's middle initial and include my bank's routing information for direct deposit.

Not exactly . . .

If you owe money now, you WILL pay INTEREST on it August 15. Also, if you UNDERESTIMATE your owed taxes by more than 10%, you will be penalized.

The IRS wants its money by TODAY. They just give you 4 extra months to get taxes files.

I will try the toll-free telephone number - it's cheaper and safer than by mail since you get a confirmation number,

I think about 7% of people file for an extension. There are few good reasons to do so. The average 1040EX takes about 4 hours. The average 1040 takes about 12 hours. Thus in the last three months you haven't been able to set 12 hours aside?

The best reason to file an extension:
You inherit money from a friend/relative who had a complex tax situation and left no records.

If you don't fit into that category, you are probably just lazy.

Edit: if you want to be really lazy, just file a tax form with payment today - then you have over a year to file a correction. Why only postpone it until August?

Letsee, my home is in California. All my tax records and receipts are here.

I spent January 8 through April 10 in Hawaii (all my paperwork wasn't finished for tax year 2001 by then). Returning to Cali on April 11th doesn't give me much time to get an accurate tax filing in 4 days.

AND, the IRS ONLY gives 4 months as a "free" extension without any excuse necessary. To further postpone your taxes till October 15 REQUIRES that the IRS accept your EXCUSE for a late filing.

Don't confuse procrastination with laziness or convenience.
;)

I do b/c I don't have all the information from last fiscal year in time to put on the 1040, etc. So in the mail Saturday went about $360.

uhmm.. you need to estimate how much you owe and pay them in order for you to file the extension. Then when the time comes, you can do your tax return and they will refund you if you overpaid.

<< Hell no! I'm getting $5 G's back....gimmie my money ASAP!!! >>

Sorry, that sucks. Letting the government borrow your money without paying you interest doesn't feel too good. Just say you did it because you love Your country.

I postpone because I like the continued attention.
