Does anyone else live in a place where people drive UNDER the speed limit?

I used to live in Atlanta, and people there routinely drive 10-15 mph over the speed limit, more on the highway. I'm not saying it's safe, just stating a fact (Atlanta highways are discernably faster than any others I've driven on).

Now, we live in Ohio, and people here are slow or something. I've never seen more people driving UNDER the speed limit, both on the highways and on the secondary roads. I was out today, and the speed limit was 35 (though it should have been 45) with three different cars driving 30-32. I'm dumbfounded because this is something I have never seen before living here. I've lived in New Jersey, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas, and now here, and I've visited extensively around the eastern US.

Is this an Ohio thing? Anyone else notice this where they live?

I'll bet the state troopers give out speeding tickets all too often there. The locals are paranoid.

Not really. I've not seen any excessive police presence, but it's the secondary roads that baffle me. There are never police on some roads, but people are going really slow. It's gets quite annoying sometimes! :)

I lived in Ohio for 21 years, definitely didn't notice that. In fact, on the 35mph street I grew up on people would routinely run 40-45 down the street. Police new this and it was a major revenue point for our town. The highway (55mph limit) usually had people running about 60-65 mph (another revenue area for my town).

Rural 2-lanes (55mph) are usually traveled at 65mph and the police usually didn't care. Interstates were good for 75mph (65mph posted) before the troopers started to ticket people. I think you accidentally moved into a retirement area.

South Florida, especially in the wintertime when the retired population goes through the roof!

I lived in Texas up until a year ago where I moved to central Pennsylvania, and the people here drive entirely too slow. For example on one of the streets I use for my daily commute to work it is posted as 45MPH, however it is not entirely uncommon for me to go ~30MPH due to slow pokes on the road.

I only visited California for a few weeks but everyone in SoCal drives at least 10 over. Quite different then here in Missouri.

Dayton. I think the comment from someone else is right on that there are a lot of retirees around here. We have retired military, retired GM workers, and just a lot of old farts running around pissing off us younger folks.

Yeah. Kingston, NY. People drive 10 mph here, don't signal, and have no concept of what a turning lane is for. I think it's the Hudson River water.

I moved here in Dyer TN and not only do 75% of the people here drive 5-10 under there is actually a town (Trenton TN) where the speed limit is 31MPH, yes 31 is on most of the streets except the main hwy 45 where it is 45. All streets off it is posted 31MPH and been meaning for a year to take my camera when I go that way to snap one off to show.

Here in Charlotte down this road called Harris he speed limit is 55, but many stupid people go under the 55 limit. When it starts going up hill there is always a car holding up the people behind by going 45 in the 55 zone... I find it extremely annoying and wish I could lay down the horn on them. I hope karma gets back at them and they bust up their car or something.

Massachusetts. I-91.....it's unbelievable. We'll have a group doing 75 or so, and suddenly we hit a group of people doing like 55..in a 65...while they're in the passing lane.

nope

I live in Atlanta now, the problem is that the speed limits are too low, 55!? I liked it when I was living in Phoenix, the speedlimits are 65-70, 75 out in the country..and people still drive over the limit :)

Yeah, Spring Hill, FL. Its not a city, its a census designated place, but it has over 80,000 inhabitants. Know why? 75% of those 80,000 are a bunch of retired old farts that don't want to have to deal with the added taxes that come with living in a city. So yes, everyone drives like an old hag because everyone here is an old hag. Actually, drivers in Tampa piss me off too, they're all so slow.

Ohio drivers are quite famous for that. I've been told it's because the Ohio HIghway Patrol is so strict. I tend to watch my speed in Ohio because of the stories I've heard and the fact that no one else is speeding either.

It depends where in Ohio you're at, as to what the typical driving pattern is. In many rural environments, folks tend to drive below the speed limit. Most of them cite fear of being ticketed as their reason.

In Columbus (at least during non-rush-hour timeframes), I usually see traffic going 5-10 MPH above the limit, at least on the major freeways. The rural routes still tend to slow people down excessively, though. Pickerington is famous for their 25 MPH limits EVERYWHERE, even in places that should be 55 or 65... it's no wonder people are afraid to drive above the limit... so they over-compensate. My entire family does that. I'm much the opposite... few people are able to keep up with me on country roads, and I'm usually among the fastest drivers there are. <shrug>

OSHP certainly has a reputation for ticketing. That said, if you're paying attention, and they can tell that, they generally leave you alone. I've gotten two speeding tickets... one was about 4 years ago, and another was about one year ago. Both were local municipalities that operate speed traps. I wasn't paying sufficient attention in either case, and got caught both times. I particularly hate it when you're driving down a rural route and the speed limit goes from 65 to 50 and then back to 65 within like 1000 feet.

I usually fly at around 80-85 on the freeway, though. I know that some cars have seen me, but then back off when I react. Coming up an incline on I-70 after midnight, when it was dark, there was a black OSHP vehicle with no lights on, at the top of the hill, looking out a mile or so. I was the only car on the freeway... I saw his parking lights come on about a split second before my radar detector indicated a direct hit, and I started slowing down right when I saw the parking lights come on. He could have gotten me for 20+ MPH over, but didn't. That's happened to me several times.
