That picture sucked. It locked up Firefox, and used 1gb of ram, and almost 1gb of swap in Ubuntu.

On top of that, it looked like shit at full resolution. It had 4bit pixels at full size.

FYI, k refers to the kilo part of it, not the bit/byte part. b refers to bit, B refers to byte.

k is short for kbps. K is short for KB, or KiloByte. At least when you're talking about transfer rates of modems.

A k, is short for 1,000, bits or Bytes

A K, as we know it, is 1024 Bytes.

A KiloByte, KB.

No, but I remember going from 28.8 to 56K right after it became available. It was great at the time. Really, that's not sarcastic, back then it was a big leap and it felt fast.

That was nothing compared with going from 2400 to 9600

Your phone line was probably on pairgain. When they run out of phone lines in an area, instead of running new lines, they tend to put a multiplexer device on the line so one pair of copper lines can service several people.

Works fine for voice, but it kills the digital to analog conversion needed for a 56K connection to work. Sometimes you could call telco repair and ask them to move you off of a pairgain circuit because you were using a 56K modem.

I still have to deal with fixes like that for people

i only very infrequently had to use 56k, or ever 28.8k for that matter since before 98 i rarely ever used a computer. we got our first computer in '99 and have been using cable since.
