does anyone else have eye strain from reading threads?

I have been doing lots of computer work this past few months and spend a lot of my time on the internet reading and stuff. For a while now, I get sore eyes from reading a lot and my eyes hurt, water up frequently and my left eye twitches on and off.

I have a nice LCD so it's not like a crappy blurry CRT or anything as you may be thinking.

I feel like it's one of those magic pictures where you need to stare through it to see the image. I feel like I sometimes see 'through' the text. Blinking doesn't help at that point. Things look distorted a bit and if I look away from the monitor or focus on something else for a while I can look back at the screen and feel better but that only lasts shortly. It's almost chronic and it wears me out for many hours even after I get off the computer. Gaming and movies don't seem to affect me as much but still do over the long run. Sometimes I can be online for an hour and feel fine but this instance is rarer and rarerer.

Sleeping doesn't help since I go to sleep around 2am and wake up at 10am and the first and last thing I do everyday is sit online.

Perhaps a few weeks on a deserted island would be very cathartic.

Fuck you comcast.

This thread is indeed NSFW. Reading it has robbed me of the motivation to continue living, let along working.

it doesn't help once I get used to it. I think it's a glare thing or my eyes are sensitive.

About 90% of the yes. On some really nice/random days, I feel fine for hours. Other times, it hurts within half an hour.

You could try 'backlighting' your monitor if you can't adjust the brightness low enough without screwing up the colors. Otherwise, stay out of the bright text, dark background sites.

yeah same, I notice that I forget to blink when I read and have made a conscious effort to keep my eyes open and blink less to take in the wonderful splendor of the internet. This could be partly the cause of my problem.

If there's glare that could certainly be a problem.
I tend to prefer using computers in dark rooms, with only the glow from the monitor and leds creating the light. Seems like a lot less strain for me.
I've never really had any eye issues, 28 years old, better than 20/20 vision, I use a 24inch LCD with a 19inch CRT at each side (each CRT running at 1600x1200@75hz)

Maybe your eyes just suck?

I get the same effect sometimes. Best cure is to take a break every now and then, go outside, and get some sunlight. I found out also that it triggers a migraine type effect of seeing spots on my eyes, but without the usual accompanying headache.

The only cure for me is to get outside and get some fresh air and sunlight.

never heard of the 20/20/20 rule?

To keep your (supposed) 20/20 vision, rest your eyes every 20 minutes be looking away from the monitor and focusing on things far away, and not emitting light (ie dont stare into the sun or harsh lighting..just look at a door, sign, tree etc for 2-3 minutes

I never heard of that rule. As a kid, I spent my whole summer on the PC with no problem. I loved the internet back in the late 90's. Then I got a life and started doing things for real. Now I find myself online more and more and it's becoming harder and harder on me. Maybe I'm getting old. I'll be 24 in July

There's no way you are a real person. You exhibit all the traits of someone imitating another person.

1) The stupid fucking personality
2) The bloated ego
3) The terrible flash site and homosexual photography.

The list could go on.
