I have a coworker that is a pretty hardcore bleeding heart, listens to Air America religiously, you know the type. Back in September when gas prices skyrocketed the governor suspended state gas taxes here in GA. She was really excited about the prospects for cheaper gas, but I asked her 'Aren't less taxes nicer Sarah?' She didn't like that too much

It sounds about right if you don't include 401k, health and pension.

Those aren't taxes; they are benefits of your choosing.

Yea, but then you'll have to pay taxes on your house. I have to pay 2.85% in property taxes every year. It really stinks.

The most liberal of my friends are the ones who try their best to avoid taxes, ethically or not. Their arguement is that we should have higher taxes, but that it should be up to the "rich" people to pay them.

Personally, I prefer to pay less taxes and give money to the causes that I choose to give to.

property tax is deductible, AFAIK.

I deduct any and all tax I pay to the state except for sales taxes on certain goods.

you can't tax a tax

Local property taxes are deductible only if they are for maintenance or repair, or interest charges related to those benefits.

is it this bad for anyone else? My deductions are as follows:

taxes (federal, state, medicare, & OASDI): $547.23
health insurance: $33.28
pension plan: $17.42
401(k): 152.39

Total: 750.32

does this sound typical for a single guy?

its like everyone gets a memo that you are making money.....oh well, guess I should be thankful that I actually have money to pay taxes....

Your thread title is misleading. You shouldn't include voluntary deductions. Besides, withholding is not true picture of actual tax you end up paying.

Up your 401k, It's taken out pretax. You don't pay tax on that income till you retire and begin withdrawals.

Where I live, the taxes are mostly local, which are not deductible. I am not sure about state taxes because I don't think that I pay much, if any, on my property.

AFAIK, all state and local taxes, including property taxes, are OK to deduct on federal taxes via itemized deductions. Not sure about local or property taxes being deducted on state returns. In KY, you can. YMMV by state.

Yes that is normal for your income.
You probably have at least 2 allowances claimed. You can change that and the withholding will change.

401k, pension and health insurance are not taxes.

Go self employed, your base tax rate for middle class is about 40.3%.
