I dunno, people who like the idea of sticking to a single schedule every weekday instead of having to work late one night and then early the next morning?

IMO, work is far more productive outside of normal business hours than within normal business hours. If I'm in my office during normal business hours, people won't stop interrupting me, and compared to the amount of work I get done after hours in the same amount of time, I'm probably 60-70% less productive.

I work 7-4, and it sucks. I simply can't fall asleep on my own at 10. Even if I dredge through being dead tired all day, I'm not capable of falling asleep at 10. If I could get 9- or even 10- I'd be a much more functional person at work.

EXACTLY.

never liked day shift. I've always worked swing or grave yard. More productive environment. All the drama queens seem to gravitate towards day shift.

yep. this.

I'm dead tired at work most days. While I'm at work, it feels like I start to wake up around 1pm. My productivity in the last hour of the day is higher than the first four hours combined. When it's time to sleep, I can't sleep because that's when I'm most awake.

That may be what it seems like, but my opinion is the day shift allows people to be their natural drama queens where as the night shift is less tolerant to bullshit. People are forced to mature there.

I hated nights cuz I couldn't sleep during the day.
I hated days cuz it has the most obnoxious people. Spoiled and stupid and a little bit lazy.

I work 7:30 to 6 most days. 9-5 would be a dream come true. I got used to getting up for those hours but I'm pretty tired when I get home. I go to bed at 10.

I used to do the 5-midnight shift when I was interning.

After my surgery in 2001, my body changed in several ways. Not the least of which was my sleep needs.

Lightweight!

I've done a 11a-3a and was back for a 7a-11p.
Lightweight yourself! :D
Doing a tour as a lighting tech can net you a load in @ 7:00 am and a load out end by 1:00am the next day, followed by a 6 hour bus ride, rinse and repeat. And by "rinse", I mean a shower at whatever facility you're in.
Average pay these days is <$1k/ week, no taxes (1099 income) + a small per Diem (~$35.00/day) or meal buy out.No medical, no dental, unless you hurt yourself, then you go home and suffer the indignities of your state's Workman's Comp. Insurance.

I'm sorry, did
I just say all that?:eek:D::\:mad::D

Rigid, inflexible hours are the most stupid idea I've ever heard of. I would much rather wake up at noon and work till 10.

I usually show up to work around 10:00-10:30 and leave about 6:00.

I don't do well waking up early.

That's what I love about my current job and last few jobs, flexible schedule where it doesn't matter when I get in (within reason) as long as the work gets done. Downside is it doesn't matter how many hours I've worked if the work isn't done, put in more than a few overnighters with no advance notice, not to mention the pay sucks.

I like being able to start whenever I want :)

If you can get up fine for 7-3 then get up at the same time for you 9-5 and so some personal development or nef.

Mornings. Suck.

If I'm in my office during normal business hours, people won't stop interrupting me, and compared to the amount of work I get done after hours in the same amount of time, I'm probably 60-70% less productive.
Definitely this. Once when I worked on a Saturday, it was nice. Quiet, and no interruptions at all. Just me and the code.
Sometimes when I've got some project to do and my supervisor wants to know how long it'll take, I need to qualify it by asking if I'll be allowed to work on it continuously, or if I'm going to be stashed on several other projects a few times over the next week.
I've been with the company for 2 years, and it feels like I become less and less productive, as there's less and less time available for me to work on actual R&D type projects. All the rest is just damage control, in that we're trying to figure out how to mitigate various problems caused by past issues and poor decisions.
It's fun when a 10hr project can end up taking more than a month to finish.

Yep. Or a 2 hr task takes weeks and weeks to complete.

This seems more on being understaffed than anything.

Depending on what I am doing I can be more productive at either place. I am not in a role mixed with support anymore so it's easy to time block if needed.

If you have to do support at the same time as development it's a long road to any finished product.

Being understaffed is part of it, but at least in my case, incompetent coworkers and tons of useless meetings are a much larger part of it.

We have a company law that goes "A full day spent in meetings is 40% wasted."

If you are finding you are included in meetings where your attendance is not needed I would talk to my manager. I find many that are optional on meetings always show up though.

Oh, I definitely need to be at all of them, because I have to deal with implementation issues, and nobody else is bright enough to understand the ramifications of seemingly harmless decisions.

My complaint is that no decisions are made. Ever. Unless I make them, in which case I'm the bad guy, and others seem to do their best to make things difficult for me.

I prefer 7-4 if possible. Move forward an hour or two and I spend twice the amount of time in traffic.
