I work 40 hours a week, and it takes me around 40 minutes to work and 40 minutes from work.

I wake up at 6:40, wash up, put on clothes, take quick breakfast to go to work by 7:15, arrive at work by 8. work till 4:30 445, come home by 5:30, and free time till 12 am. weekends off.

I have plenty of time.

I work the graveyard shift so I'm sleeping the whole day.

Wake up at 10pm out the door by 11:30pm. Off at 9am, get home around 10am. Fall asleep around 1pm and repeat the whole thing over again. If I dont get a good 8 hours of sleep during the day I am dead tired at work and it sucks.

Its a never ending cycle.

Same here, and we get the added bonus of no social life.

do you have 2 days off? If your working the 11-7, why not goto sleep at 8 and get up around 4, then you have your evenings off

I'm in the same boat. I wish I had more time for myself. I feel like I'm in a bit of a slump at work too -- I'm not as productive as I was when I started my job. I have so many things I want to do when I get home but am so tired that I usually only surf the net or watch TV and the next day I feel less happy about being at work because I didn't get to do anything. And the cycle repeats itself. Plus, I'm not exercising and I'm way out of shape now. Life sucks.

I had a friend that commited a lot of time to work 10 years with his comapny. Went to India to work for a while. Yesterday I heard he got laid off with about 10% of the other managment. This is after he picked up and moved to another city for them about 8 months ago. Everyone I know liked the guy.

I guess I am saying there is no reason to stress and wrap you life around the company. If it is pubilicly traded dont sweat how commited you are. Take your vacation and stick to your hours. They'll cut you loose when they feel like it.

Yes, I feel the same way. My plan is to work my ass off for <= 5 years build myself a decent little house and work as little as possible so I can pay for utilities/groceries and have more time to just veg.

That is what I thought I would do when I took the nursing job. Unfortunately, I'm unable to sleep during the day even with tylenol PM or melatonin. Instead, I sleep from 3-10, and even that isn't the best quality sleep, and catch up on my days off.

Working 3rd shift really is all about the sleep.

please tell me more...what profession offers this?

Writing, for one. Medical Transcription and Coding are two more. Quite a few others out there if you look hard enough.

Too many people become their job. It's like they aren't even human anymore. It's not something they do to pay the bills, they ARE an IT specialist. Personally I don't give a rat's arse what you do to pay your bills, I'd rather get to know a human being. So if you feel your job is sucking your soul, as it most likely is, then quit find a differant path.

I turned down a job offer that would pay me 20% more because of the increase in commute time.

My current job is a 10 min. bike-ride from my house. the new one would be a 2 1/2-hours a day commute.

since my new job is closer to work its not as bad, but yeah, i feel the same way.

i used to drive an hour 1 way to work and another hour or more back home every day.
i'm now about 35-40 minutes one way.

get home around 5:30 and then go to bed around 10 or 11. doesn't leave much time to do anything.

Off and on I feel this, but realize there isn't really anything to be done about it unless I hit the lottery or something else unrealistic like that.

lol, that schedule is for wimps. I work anywhere from 14 to 18 hours a day right now. My schedule is: get out of bed at anywhere from 6 am to 8 am, go directly to my office (at home), work all day and as long as I can until I can't see or think any more, usually somewhere between 10 pm and 1 am. Rinse and repeat, 7 days a week. I easily put in over a 100 hours a week and have been doing this since the first week of July, and expect it to continue at least until May 2007.

Oh, and the best part, I don't get paid for it.

The only good thing is that I work at home so I don't have to commute anywhere and I can watch footbal while I'm working. Well, one other good thing, this is for a new business I'm starting up. ;)
