Does anyone else feel Star Trek is inspirational?

I wish I could live to see the day we get technology like that on Star Trek. Replicators, holodecks, warp drive, transporters, artificial gravity, oh man.

I for one thought the opening song on the Enterprise series was great. It was like, "we've come this far, from raft to schooner to aircraft carrier to space shuttle to Cochran, and now we're finally ready to stand up."

The whole spirit of exploration thing FTW.
 
i once wrote a paper on the progression of racial/gender barriers being broken throughout the life of Star Trek (started with young white capt. with racially diverse crew and evolving into african american capt., female capt., asian capt., alien capts, etc.) A+ b/c the prof. turned out to be a Trekkie(er?) :laugh:
 
Haha, the Enterprise theme was so cheesey, like an 80's power ballad, but I too enjoyed it. 🙂

The characters in TNG were inspiring, if a bit lofty at times. One episode that sticks out in my mind was when Picard was given a second chance to choose to fight a Norsican during his cadet days (and in so doing, getting stabbed in the heart and requiring an artificial heart). Q granted him this choice, he made the choice, and 30 years in the future Picard is nothing more than a lowly lieutenant, because he didn't take that risk. That episode always struck a chord with me, trying to find a balance between that comfortable, safe, and plebian life versus reaching for and achieving something outstanding. So far I've been unsuccessful, but it was still a good episode!
 
It is a positive vision of the future. It would be great if some day we could travel to other star systems in a few hours. Hopefully we won't blow ourselves up first 🙂

Yeah, that's one of the episodes I really enjoyed, along with "Measure of a Man". Some good stuff!

I didn't watch much of original series, but TNG for sure... somewhat for DS9... and rarely on Voyager.

star trek is freaking boring though. not inspiring at all
 
I think the Federation is an ideal society that we all hope to aspire to become. However, Communism is never perfect 🙁

I loved the original series cast. You have everyone.

Captain Kirk: Average white american male
Spock: Alien! Can't get more minority than that
McCoy: Southern US male
Chekov: Freakin' Russian! In the middle of the Cold War! How risque!
Sulu: Asian-American, (And also gay!)
Uhura: Black african woman (In a supporting role, wow!)
Scotty: Stereotypical scotsman

It's a virtual menagerie!

In the Star Trek world it is, because the "Scarcity of resources vs. unlimited wants" problem is solved. 🙂 You can have just about any material possesion you want out of a replicator and there are hundreds of worlds with open land for you to live on.

Yes.. I loved it as a kid, and I think it made me a more moral person..

I didn't watch much crap like married with children...
 
That's its saving grace for me. As a TV show it is rather lacking but the ideas and vision make it interesting.
 
What was the episode where Picard was zapped by that probe they found floating around space, causing him to live an entire life on an alien planet? I think thats where he learned to play the flute as well. I thought that was an excellent episode.

And yes, the series was definitely inspiring at times.
