I use both and have more of an occasion to use the zip than the burner. I loathe cdrw and have foudn them to be unreliable for my use. I haven't had a problem with the zip yet after 5 years so I'll continueally use them for quick backups.

Heh heh, that's what I do with my Sparq drive. :D

As far as the Zip goes, I got one, along w/ a 2x2x6x burner, with my last computer, and have used it like twice. At least it's there if I ever need it.

I use one from time to time, but only for special purposes. The local law library has a zip drive, so if I want to grab a bunch of cases from Westlaw, or whatever, it's perfect for that. Otherwise with immense drives and the presence of CD-RWs, my zip goes mainly unused.

My ZIP 250 drive has proven itself indispensible (sp?) in this my first year of college. For any group project work in the labs, a CDRW is not an option because there are only three computers in each lab capable of writing to a CDRW, but every computer has at least a ZIP 100 drive (and ZIP 250 is becoming more and more common). Right now I'm working on a presentation in my Architecture course that will be on a ZIP disk. ZIP's are really only useful to me as a large floppy, backup is always done on a CDR.

To me it's just a lot more convenient to pop in a zip and copy a file to it if I just want to move a file between computers or something. You can also use a zip more dynamically (if my hard drive crashes I can slap linux on a zip and still have a semi functional system. can't do that w/ a cdrw). To me it's just more versatile to use, and even though media is a little expensive, my 3 zip disks I have now have lasted me since I've had the drive (never really needed any more of them). I use my burner a lot too though, it's just for either backing up a cd or large amounts of data from my hard drive in a more permanent fashion.

My LS-120 though is a complete waste. I never use those disks. I only keep the drive as opposed to a standard floppy b/c of the cool electric eject.

I use my zip everyday. Either bringing files back and forth to work or backing up my banking. Zip drives are still a good thing:)

kami - They're Gigastorage, I believe. They're the only kinds that work on my friend's DVD player.

People talk about CD-rom's not being to able to read them, but I usually only use CD-RW as monthly backup for files that get changed every now and then.

Also, this may be just me but 3 out of 4 of my computers can read CD-RW's, and that's enough for me . . .

Gone are the days when I was immpatiently waiting the retrieval of huge files on an external EPP ZIP 100 drive. It's gone...sold! My Sony CRX140E 8x4x32x CD-RW hath buried the sluggish drive. CD-RW media is alot cheaper (based on price per mb) and less vulernable to wearing out like ZIP disks do after being inserted so many times. But overall, I would say that storage on ZIP disks is easy to perform compared to burning a CD. Just my $0.02 worth.

had it for 5 years..was good but I'd rather use cd burner now. blanks are so cheap these days. I have purchased 25pak for $3.00 x12 & 80min. that's like less then $0.16.

peace..;)

the media is why i do not have a zip drive.

it's expensive, and not as reliable as CDs ;-)

besides, if i burn, there is a better chance of people that i share with to have a CD-ROM drive, than a zip.

if the media was cheaper, i probably would get a drive, and use them in school. university has drives ;-)

either way, the damn CDRs are so cheap ;-)
