Does anyone actually sit down and listen to music anymore?

It seems that everyone uses music for background noise... I am guilty of it too, but every weekend I like to set aside a couple of hours to just listen to some good music. Doing this grows greater appreciation for the great musicians I find. It's strange how there are many bands that I like but would not like to sit and listen without doing anything else.

I usually spend about half hour to an hour everyday just listening to music.. and nothing else.. maybe check forums/e-mail.. but I usually just crank up the tunes to get the blood moving and the adrenaline up before I go to the gym, which is almost everyday..

Yeah, I'm the opposite of what you just described. I can't just use it as background noise if it's music I like. I have to just sit there and listen, or dance, or do something related to it. That's why I can't do homework and listen to music, that's why I don't listen to the radio much, etc.

i always listen to music. 24/7. i even set aside time where i just chill and listen to music and examine it from a a musicians point of view. going on long walks by the shore with music is also great.

I still honestly love music- sometimes there's nothing better than kicking back between my Polk Audio tower speakers (in a perfect equllateral triangle for optimal stereo imaging, that is) and listening to a good Sheffield Labs CD. Any smooth jazz CD is nice and relaxing as well. I am 90% guilty of playing music just for background (heck, doing it right now), but I do like to take that 10% out at least once a week and actually appreciate it.

Wow! Not the response I expected! That's cool that you guys can just chillax listening to your favorite tunes!

Here's another question though... does you opinion of a band change when you listen to them without distraction? I am a huge fan of 311 (I got 5 of their albums), but when I listened to them without distraction I was not impressed anymore. I can barely stand listen to Limp Bizkit as background "NOISE", I would like to know if some people can sit through a whole album of their stuff without distractions!

On the other side of the coin I have gained much more respect for bands like the Rheostatics, Rush, Nick Drake, Van Morrison, (the list goes one) when listening without distractions.

btw, listening to Gordon Lightfoot right now :)

I would say I spend at least an hour a day doing nothing but listening to music. On top of that, I usually play my bass for an hour or two every day.

Probably 1-2 hours per week I just listen. But that's in many small chuncks.

The only i solely listen to music and do nothing else is in the recording studio. Other than that, I'm always doing something, but usually paying the music a good bit of attention.

I find it dificult to passivly listen to music. Im also addicted to singing along. actualy alot of times I just sing without the music on. Its a great stress release for me.

But I love just listening to the pipes and fiddle. Occasionaly Il just sit for a few hours listening to some good instrumentals.
mostly I listen to country, irish , and sottish folk music (celtic/traditional) but i have prety wide range in tastes. I dont voluntarily listen to any heavy metal or rap, but have been interested in those genres in the past.

I listen to music all the time, at the office I use my MP3 collection, between home @ the office I use a walkman, at home I listen to music on my PC, my bedroom stereo, etc.

I agree with travler on this one:
