does anyone actually freeze bread?

got some hot dog rolls and loaves of bread from Mom (she's cool like that) and she said to freeze what i don't need. never heard of that, to me it doesn't seem like bread is meant to be frozen.

anyone ever do that? does it keep it fresh? do you just leave it out to defrost it? i haven't done anything yet, i'll probably drop somme off at the food pantry if freezing ruins bread, which i imagine it would.

All the time. I buy loaves of bread at Sams Club in two packs for $3.00. Keep one in the pantry, throw the other in the freezer for a week. Pull it out and let it thaw overnight, and it's perfectly fine.

Same thing with hotdog/hamburger buns. With two of us eating them in the house, it's not easy going through 8 buns before they go bad. Eat what we need, throw the rest in the freezer. If they are in there for less than a few months it's no big deal.

Yeah, my parents used to do that all the time while I was growing up. As long as they don't stay in there too long they are fine.

Yeah my mom does it all the time. It's as good as fresh with the toaster oven though.
But I personally hold the view that if I can't finish it by the time it goes bad in the fridge, I'm not going to eat it anyways.

Yes. We haven't been able to completely switch from white to wheat so we split the loaves (SP?) and freeze the other half of each.

Yup, same here.

If it's fresh-baked bread, wrap it in saran wrap (clear plastic wrap) and then wrap it in tinfoil. It will keep for a good 6 weeks this way.

My mom does. I personally think it dries it out a bit much, so I don't do it unless I have a lot extra from something. I do bag and refrigerate to make it last long enough for me to eat though.

yeap i do it all the time. we get 2-4 loaves and keep one out and hte rest in the freezer. that usually last us 2 weeks or so.

just let it thaw for a couple hours and its fine.

My wife keeps the extra bread in the freezer all the time. As she needs more, she take a few pieces out and allows them to thaw in a zip-loc bag. Tastes just as fresh this way as fresh off the store shelf.

I have a half a loaf in the freezer right now. My mom used to do it and the only annoyance is when a loaf would be almost gone and no one would take out one from the freezer .

Make sure you scrape off any excess ice before thawing, otherwise you'll get wet spots in your bread.

I do. I usually buy more than one loaf at a time, the loaves that just sit around waiting to be eaten tend to just mold.

Yes. Bread also thaws very quickly, so it's just a matter of leaving it out for an hour.

My dad puts the toaster oven on 500, puts a couple of rolls in, and shuts it off after like 3 min. Leaves the bread in there for another 5-10 mins and its ready. It makes the outside a little crustier, but Italian folks tend to like that...

My mother still does this and I know it makes the bread taste slightly stale when it's thawed. If I am not going to eat bread I won't buy extra unless I get a loaf for free. And I still rarely put that in the freezer because bread has a pretty long shelf life if it's sealed from the air.
