Personally I'd take a GF2 over the V5, & I wouldn't spend so much on the CPU, but that's just me. One other thing, DDR Athlon boards are on the horizon. Take a look at Anand's preview, & see if it's worth it to you to wait for the performance boost. Just a personal recommendation, unless you're dead set on having everything inside your comp I'd look into a Creative Labs Flash 56K II external modem. I got mine for about what your internal is running you, & I love it. Currently connected at 52,000, & I'm 10 miles from the nearest town.

Other than that it looks like a sweet system. Of course mine would whip it's ass, but that's OK.

Its not for me, its for my uncle.

Youre right, I will knock the CPU down to 800.

I am sorely dissappointed in the GF2's visual clarity (poor RAMDAC design). That is the reason for the V5. Of course I may see if my uncle will trade the V5 for my 32MB GF2. He has a Trinitron monitor already, and wouldn't be running the GF2 at the resolutions I am running it at, so the problems I get wouldn't show up for him.

You know what sucks? It looks like 3Com is no longer making any 56K modems.

The x-gamer is 77 @ buy.com w/10 coupon and I could have sworn usr hardware pci was cheaper - oem maybe...

3com is no longer making analog modems. They make the courier line still, but nothing else. They are broadband only now.

Secondly buy.com would cost extra for shipping. May save about $10, but the hassle of placing multiple orders isn't worth it.

Does he plan on overclocking? if he does I would get a Supermicro Case and Mushkin Mosel Vital Rev 2.0 memory

Classic Athlon, Duron, or Thunderbird? If it's a Classic, then the PAL6035 won't install on it. (Actually, it can, I think, but it needs the feet)

I think the voodoo 5500 is a very good choice. I have one and am very happy with it both in 2d and 3d. There have been alot of problems ascociated with the geforce 2.

well i like the fsaa on the v5 personally, but if you want a faster card with a good ramdac design and good 2d get a radeon (well if you are running win2k dont)

I'd go w/ the Asus A7V or the Abit KT7. The MSI K7T doesn't have a way to change the multiplier and although you may have no intention of overclocking now, things can change. The A7V has ATA100 onboard if that's what you want.

Also, if there any reason aside from price that you need 2x128 sticks? Crucial has CAS2 in a 256 stick which would be a better route to go IMO. For compatibility's sake, always better to have one stick rather than two but sometimes it's good to have two if you need to stick one in another computer.

You're so close to 1ghz w/ that CPU, it would be shame to not give it try.

Okay the A7V uses the Promise controller, so thats good. Plus overclocking... you got me convinced... A7V and to overclock (im an overclocker at heart... i just isn't my machine though).

Reason for 2 sticks of ram:

Interleaving is between different banks of RAM. With one stick you have two banks, therefore are limited to two-way interleaving. With 2 sticks you have 4 banks and can do 4-way interleaving which is faster.

i'd say the 800, its probably worth it considering its only a little more. My 800 is at 904 with only default voltage 1.7 volts and its not even a blue core one. I've heard some people with the 700 couldn't get over 850 and they had to use an alpha etc with 1.85 volts.

Good choice on the P3. 😉

My P3 700e is humming along quite nicely at 966/1.7V right now with my ArctiCooler installed.

Yeah, I had a K6-2 and a K6-3 also. Those were real crapass processors. I felt so inferior to my friends with their PIIs at lower clock speeds that were kicking my computer's ass. However, the Duron IS as good as everyone says it is (or I just got lucky). My Duron 700 runs at 1000mhz with only 1.8 volts, and could probably do 1050 if I nudged it up to 1.85 volts. I'm running an Abit KT7 Raid, but I've heard bad things about the RAID controller. I haven't actually used the RAID controller for RAID, so I'm taking someone else's work on it. The regular KT7 is a real steal though. It's only about $145, has the software settings (I truly appreciate it now), and is very stable. To test it I ran Quake3 with 12 bots in nightmare mode all weekend and when I came back they were still happily killing each other.

Sorry, I get so hyped up talking about my computer. 🙂

Good Job with switching to the 700E
Have you considered maybe the Promise FastTrak RAID solution and get 2 75GXP 15 gig Hds? I don't know if it would be of use to him, but it sounds cool...

Oh, why get the X-gamer, when I think its like 35 bucks for the Sound Blaster Live Value which is the same thing without software. I havn't done a comparison myself though so I may be wrong.

With a digi sound card and DVD player would you consider maybe a dolby sound speaker setup like the creative labs DTS2500, or I've heard the Sirrocco Crossfires are good.

Oh and with the Intellimouse Optical, I'd definitly go with the Intellimouse Explorer. I have Both, and by far I'd throw the optical away over the explorer as it scans the desktop more with more DPI, and has a better feel. The 2000DPI Razor Mouse has hit retail stores in my area, and my friend got it. It makes all mice (including intellimice) inferior with its superior smooth gliding and sensitivity.

With the explorer I recommend a plastic mouse and Gel wrist pad, that relieves stress and adds ice smooth gliding. I like the Everglide Giganta, but can't see any significant differences with the RATzpads and other plastic like mousing surfaces. Try a plastic cuttingboard, and you'll get an idea.

Oh, You might wanna research this, but I thought mushkin.com had the Revision 2 PC133 cas222 ram that was one of the best. Maybe look into that.

These are just some thoughts that came to mind. Good luck with the system, I hope your uncle likes it. (I know I would)

viper, where'd you get the articooler and for how much? i have the same 700e cb0 running at 966@default voltage but 40 degrees celcius for idle temp with my stock intel hs/fan. would you recommend the articooler or the alphas?

For one the SBLive value has standard connectors, the x-gamer has gold.

My uncle is on the road, bulk is a concern. He will be mostly using headphones. DVD is so he can watch movies in the condos he stays in, (he stays for a month or two at a time).

My uncle is left handed 🙂 kinda makes the righty only explorer useless. Plus since he is on the road, a mouse pad is a hassle... optical will rock for that.

Yeah I know the Mushkin stuff rocks. But the 700E@933 (intended speed) is 133Mhz FSB, which is right on for the Crucial, and that is $80 less than the Mushkin.

When I overclock I like to put it on the supported Mhz. I don't mind giving up the extra few Mhz for the added assurance that it won't die.
