i got it off of GOG for like 5$ when it was on sale

man, i love those games. level 1 and 7 of descent 1 make up such a disproportionately large percent of the fun i had as a child

The easiest way is probably to use DXX-Rebirth. Basically it is a modern engine that uses the Descent assets. I played through both D1 and D2 not long ago using Rebirth on Windows 8.1 and everything worked great.

GOG and Steam versions are much easier. But good luck with whatever you do.

Might sound stupid, but have you tried to right click the .exe and set compatibility with win98 and run as admin?
Now if the game run in dos, all you need is http://www.dosbox.com/

This. Works fine for me on Win8.1 and Win7 (haven't tried it on Win10 yet).
