The 20 minutes of cardio I mentioned in my blog is very high intensity cardio. I'm not just jogging. So RedDawn, saying 20 minutes of cardio is nothing is completely wrong. It depends on the manner of the workout. My meaning of cardio isn't to walk around for 2 hours. I don't have the time. I ran a decent mile even back in junior high so I know how to keep a good cardio workout. ;) Here's what I do, it depends if I want to go outside or not. The goal is to keep the heart rate up, not to gain any leg/muscle mass. I find that when I'm jogging outside I go a lot faster than if I'm inside.


Fully stretch at least a few minutes if not more.

Outside:

Almost sprint pace 5min
Med-Slow Jog 5min
Fast Jog 5min
Med-Slow Jog 5min
Walk 5min

It's all in the mindset. If I time it and know I have to work harder then I will. It's also good to go out with someone.. my dad is 50 years old and I go out jogging with him sometimes, but we aren't always in the same place if I go faster. :p


Inside:

I switch off between jumping jacks, jogging in place fast, up/down stairs here in the dorm, and I don't know what they're called, but they're from basketball (you sprint from one end of the gym to the other, touch the line, sprint to the other side), high knee lifts -- at least 90 degrees. I switch between all of them. I'm sure that there's more types of cardio out there but this seems to get me tired hella fast, and it's stuff I remember from basketball. :)

Even 20 minutes of moderate intensity cardio (~70% max heartrate) three times a week is very good for you. It's a hell of a lot better than doing nothing. It's the "all or nothing" attitude that causes people to burn out and quit. I'm surprised how easy it is to hit 80% of my max heart rate.

I started with some free weights added to my machine routine this week and also started really working the muscle groups in my back.I pretty much hurt 24/7 in parts of my body that I cannot even pronounce the names of. The only things that don't hurt are my hair and my teeth. I also tried the abs class tonight for some variety.

1 month down,2 more to go....

I guess it depends on what you want to achieve . I need the mileage. I'm into mountaineering and the best workout for me (and most climbers) is long distance running. I have no doubt that HIIT can help you to get a fast mile but
IMHO when you want to run +10k at a decent pace it's a whole different thing.

If you're trying to build muscle I recommend the powerbase. I have one and it works great. You stand on a platform that has resistance bands attatched to it. You can workout just about every muscle in your body and it's got bands from 5-300lbs of resistance (for the men's unit) and 5-150lbs resistance for the women's unit.

You can use the weak bands for cardio and the harder ones for weight lifting.

I'm not trying to sell it or anything but I own one and it's great. Mine was $200 about a year ago. Look around on the net for Powerbase, most people give it good reviews.

I detest the gym. I mountain bike regularly, and do yoga. I try to do a 25 mile road ride once a week (usually Tuesdays after work), and I try to get in one off-road ride once a week (5 - 10 miles). I usually do a Saturday morning yoga class, since the instructor is an attractive middle aged lady.

I guess I'm an atypical geek. :D

I don't go to the gym. I don' t like being around all the other people, and I wouldn't pay to excersize when there are a thousand ways to do it for free.

Nope, I love going to the gym! But unfortunately my old gym where I used to go does'nt have child minding, so I had to quit when I had my son.

I did try out another gym that had child minding...but I did'nt like the atmosphere or the amount of children they jammed packed into the child minding.

So I make do now with my free weights, the ball and treadmill at home :)

i don't work out, and don't need to for appearance reasons, although it's always nice to start good habits early i guess. i may need to in 10 years.

oh man, the cardio machines are the worst for getting bored and unmotivated.

try a spinning class or areobics or something, i find it a bit easier to get through my hour of cardio a day.

to make surei get there i usually meet my one friend there, even if we do different things just knowing that she is waiting for me (coughtogossipwhilewechange) is enough to get my but there.

i like it though, it feels good being stronger.

I agree with you about running in the gym, I can't stand it. It didn't bother me running on the treadmill until I started running outside. Now I get bored so easily on the treadmill.

But as far as hating the gym, no way, I love it. I love a good workout and how I feel afterwards. The only time that I dislike the gym is after a long layoff, then it's horrible until you get your rhythm back.

My honey took me to buy new workout clothing today,I'd have bought size small pants but they were way too short,had to settle for roomy mediums..maybe this gym stuff isn't so bad:)

Well he is half true and half not.

You ever seen a Gymnast? Well they do bodyweight stuff almost exclusively and see AMAZING results. But they sure as hell put in a hell of a lot of hours training. But they end up with stick legs. Unless you start with some weights your legs will only get so so strong and big with bodyweight stuff. They will be strong but as a Gymnast they'll stay small. Won't get big legs...

I love going to the gym. I train at a club so it is different as I have a bunch of friends and guys I know at the club. We lift together and the atmosphere amazing when training. Much easier to get pumped and lift.

But the times I go on my own it is trying to lift and just much harder when no one is around :(. But I get my ass to do it as I want to be freaking amazing at my OL and Gymnastics and the hrs I put in now will help me out.

Do squats and up the protein and food intake if you want to put muscle on. Deadlifts, bench press, dips, chins and some curls if you want. That is all you need in reality if you want to pack on muscle. Diet is a lot to do with gaining muscle. Doing wrist curls and calf raisers is not so time efficient to gaining msucle.....

Well it is good to hurt at times. But it isn't always a good indication of progress though...but most of the time it indicates where you haven't trained some muscle or just had a break and they are not use to it.

I always hurt when I take a 2week break of no lifting. I just right back in to it and don't bother to go easy on myself.

It is good to train.

You should be getting results faster then that time frame. 6-8 weeks is plenty time to see noticable progress unless you are almost where you want to be.

I'd also say ditch the machines for lifting.

Squat, deadlift, chins/dips (okay use the machines for this if you can't do 10) and add some bench press and military press. Pretty much all you need. Add in some back and abb stuff and you are SET imo.

The other machines that help you can go without.

My trainer is upping my routine now,we're adding a back day,free weights.assisted chip up's and breaking down leg day so that I'm not burning out doing glutes, quads,hamstrings and calves on the same day.

Also I am proud to announce that I now have noticable biceps and triceps:D

Hey you don't need to work glutes, quads, hamstrings and calves in one day!

Just do squats and deadlifts. THAT there is PLENTY OF a leg work out. Just make sure you do squats to FULL DEPTH and all the way down.

You seen an asian dude sit down in a squat or in films right? Well that is how deep you should squat down to. My gran who is 68 can still do it and every other asian person I have ever met.

Can you do that? If so I'd do that with some weights and you will see AMAZING results in 6-8 weeks I promise.
