Does anybody else feed the birds?

What have we gotten ourselves into? lol..

It all started with a single bird feeder. Now we're up to two seed feeders, a thistle seed sock, a fruit & nut brick holder, and two suet holders.

The birds are happy, though. We see mostly House Finches and House Sparrows, but also see Titmice, Juncos, Flickers, Bewick's Wren, and some Woodpeckers.

Of course, we have also acquired 2 books to help identify our visitors. This hobby is getting expensive... lol

My wife puts out a ton of food for the birds, squirrels, and anything else that wants to eat it out along the edge of the woods in our yard.

I like my pet bird as much as I like my pet cat. And yes, I do feed it, but not the neighborhood birds. Although during the summer I keep a water dish out for them to drink and bathe in. Here it is:

I also enjoy watching/feeding birds. Have a little wildlife sanctuary going on in my own back yard. Get a large, deep bird bath as well and it will attract more.

If you want to ID them pick up the iBird Explorer Pro app for an iphone if you have one. It's 30 bucks but you can ID anything with it just based on a color or two. Wait until you start IDing them by song only!

Just the hummingbirds. Even though it's winter, we still have a decent flock that hang out at the feeders.

Yes, I do.

They are messy things though.

wow you must have a really busy life between feeding wild birds and making 45000 posts

Birds are cool. I don't feed them usually(excepting hummingbirds), but I always notice them when I'm out and about.

We got the Smithsonian and the Audubon guides. They're both very nice, but each has their intended application. Smithsonian = Kitchen table. Audubon = pocket. The Smithsonian is superb.

My wife is spending a lot of cash on seeds and I will have to put up more bird feeders this summer. But since I'm in the military, I've got an eye for optics and I'm going to replace my binos with a new pair! That way she can look at, you know, birds. 🙂

I used to, back when I lived in the rental house. It was cheap entertainment for my cat. He'd sit in the window for HOURS, watching the birds! :awe:

Now we're in an apartment, on the 2nd floor. Too far from the ground for him to bird watch. 🙁

I've always wanted to get into the habit of bird-watching, but was afraid of the whole $$$ thing... buying seeds, feeders, identifier books, then binoculars, then a nice camera, then a nice zoom lens...
