Does an iPod backup my songs? Like if my HD craps out and I get a new HD and I sync iTunes with my fully loaded ipod, will all my songs be moved on the new HD?

Nope. It will deleate the songs that it does not see on the computer off the Ipod... There are ways around it tho.

All your files on the ipod are hidden so you can just copy them back to your hd.

Your not supposed to be able to retrieve the music, but when my main hard drive crapped out I just copied the hidden files off the ipod and imported them into itunes and got them all back.

I think the trick is to tell ITunes to treat you IPod as an external HD. The caveat is that it won't automatically manage your songs (which was a nice feature). I have an old IPod, so I don't know if this is still true.

It is faily easy to get your songs back. Connect your iPod, if itunes tries to open, close it immediately. Open ipod hard drive in windows explorer. go to tools menu and turn on show hidden files. go to control->music-> and all your music will be spread over 50 folders.
