Does AMD Athlon cpus have MMX technology. I've seen several software and games that require it. If not, should I persure getting a pentium insteaD?

"MMX+" is a subset of SSE; it is the integer portion of SSE. The Palomino core has SSE, so it has your so-called "MMX+"

Hmm, are you sure about the SSE part and MMX+? I ran Sisoft a week ago and according to it, my 1200/266 Tbird has MMX+. Part of Enhanced 3dnow perhaps?

sandorski, if you mean SSE and Athlons, SSE is only present in the Palomino, not the Thunderbird, hence it didn't show up. If you mean SSE in relation to MMX+, I would think you are right.

Okay, lets see if I can become unconfoosled :p

There's no such thing as "MMX+." MMX is x86 integer SIMD. SSE is also SIMD technolgoy. Most of the instructions are floating point based, unlike MMX. However, SSE also contains some integer and memory managment instructions.

The Athlon has MMX. The Athlon also has 3dNow!It also has the memory management instructions from SSE (but not the floating point, or the integer instructions), and these were called "Enhanced 3dNow! instructions". Palomino, i.e., the "Athlon 4" and "Athlon MP" both have MMX, 3dNow!, Enhanced 3dNow!, and the rest of the instructions from SSE that they were lacking.

Palomino does NOT have SSE2.

There, I think I'm now unconfused. And you guys?

I think the correct name is actually Enhanced 3dNow! instead of extended 3dNow. But I might be wrong:confused:

Yep, you were right, and updated the other post accordingly.

Yikes, I'm having a terrible spelling day...
