this is what i saw at pricewatch......so what the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit pci?

ASC-29160N, Ultra160 LVD SCSI3, whitebox kit w/ 5-year warranty. 32bit PCI, manual, reg card, drivers, cables: 5pos 68pin w/ lvd term, 5pos 50pin
Adaptec ASC-29160, Ultra160 LVD SCSI3, whitebox kit w/ 5-year warranty. 64bit PCI, manual, reg card, drivers, cables: 5pos 68pin w/ lvd term, 5pos 50pin, 3pos 68pin, ASC-29160

Old thread, but this thread went unanswered:

Yeah, the Adaptec 29160, and 39160 are 64-bit cards. The 29160N is 32-bit. Any of them work in a 32-bit slot though, it's backwards compatible. I'm running a 39160 in my system right now.

The difference between 64-bit and 32-bit is the bandwidth. Ultra 160 is 160MB/sec. 32-bit PCI only goes up to 133MB/sec (32 bit * (1 byte / 8 bit) * 33Mhz * (1*10^6/sec*Mhz)) 64-bit PCI goes up to 267MB/sec (64 bit * (1 byte / 8 bit) * 33Mhz * (1*10^6/sec*Mhz))

Therefore if you are running an Ultra 160 card you only get 133MB/sec across the bus. Between devices on the same controller you still get the 160MB/sec since it doesn't have to cross the PCI bus.

Wanted to add, I'm not sure if all 64-bit PCI cards are backwards compatible. I just know that those two are.
