Does alcohol impede fat-loss/burning?

I am on the cusp of turning 31 next week, and as a result taking stock of my general well being as an almost 31 year old male.

Sidebar: I have always worked out in some capacity since high school. In my late teens, early 20's I was in the gym a lot, and was benching 3 sets of 275, 10 reps each... and could run a 6 minute mile. As you can guess that has diminished over the years, mostly due to my goals changing... now I am at more of a "maintain" goal, rather than build, build, build. In those days I was steady at about 180-190... now I am anywhere between 205 and 215. I am 6'2" btw...

Now I work a desk for a living, but in my building I have a gym on the second floor and I work out for roughly 40-50 mins on my lunch hour. I do cardio for at least 20 of those minutes. Just to give you an idea, I can do pullups all day long, usually do 4 sets of 12 with ease, and can probably run an 8 minute mile now(I am a weak runner, but can ride my bike at a 18-19 mph pace for 30-40 miles no sweat)

When I get home though, it is beer thirty...

Problem: I am finding it harder to "maintain" my weight with my current lifestyle, and I am trying to find the culprit... Now I am not "addicted" to alcohol, but I do like to drink... and I cook so I do like to eat... but what I eat is usually pretty healthy, but sometimes I eat too much of it, which in the end, is just as bad.

I had a buddy who was doing weight watchers, and said that any more than 2 drinks a night and your body stops buring fat and focuses on expelling the alcohol in your system... so my main question is: Does alcohol impede fat-loss/burning?

Alcohol calories are burned first. This is because we cannot store alcohol energy. Next, we burn protein, then carbohydrates, then fat. In practice, however, we typically burn a "mixture" of carbs and fat, with the ratio being dependent on meals. Just after meals we burn mainly carbohydrate, while between meals we burn more fat.

it supresses the fat oxidation yes, because its dealing with alcohol

however, the big thing is a few beers later you just added 1000 worthless grain based calories to your food intake.

also, dont trust most of what weight watchers says, they feed you a shitty diet

Well most of the time during the week I will have a salad with grilled chichen in it, and then "take down" about 3-5 beers, or anywhere from 2-4 glasses of wine... man that sounds bad as I type it... but I foolishly try to eat less, drink more since I know how many calories are in beer...

So I pretty much answered my own question then... no more drinking during the work week.. man that's depressing...

Yeah I'm realizing that I have to do the same thing. I'm going to be dropping down from 6-8 drinks a night to no more than 3, and then slowly reduce the number of days per week I allow myself to drink. I let 2009 slide too much and gained 20 pounds, most of which I attribute to alcohol consumption, since I ate pretty much the same as I did when I was losing weight. Bummer, but it's for the best ultimately.

I won't claim to be an expert on how the body handles alcohol, but for me, drinking anymore than one or two beers is a no-no to keep my body in training mode. Anymore than that and I am VERY likely to skip running/weight lifting the next day and am more likely to eat poorly. Now this is not the end of the world every once in a while...but it is a very meditated move on my part knowing what the consequences will be. Alchohol just does not do my body very well. My decision to rarely drink is not a losing weight issue but a feeling good issue. I'm 31 and 6'5"/180lbs... so losing weight is not a concern... but feeling good is a major goal for me... and not eating healthy or drinking alcohol definitely makes me feel crappy and kills my ambition.

yeeeeeeeeeeeeah I do maybe 1 beer twice a week maybe

Well to be fair, I never call in sick (5-6 days in the last 10 years), I always wake up on time, and I always work out at LEAST 3 days a week. Some people like drinking more than others... myself, I like it, but I certainly don't need it. I honestly think it is more of a seasonal thing, since I don't really go outside to do anything during this time of the year. But hey, I know that I need to cut back significantly if I want to shed any of this weight...

Alcohol metabolism directly competes with other metabolic processes, thereby limiting or hindering other substrate-level or oxidative pathways. Also, gives off 7 kilocalories per gram compared to 4kcal/gram for carbs and protein and 9kcal/gram for fat. These are only a few of the reasons why alcohol impedes weight loss.

Thanks for the explaination!

Studies have shown that small amounts of alcohol increase muscular endurance and strength output, but, these benefits are very short lived. After around twenty or so minutes, the problems start. All the negative side affects of alcohol fully outweigh any possible benefits it can have to anyone. Alcohol is a toxin (poison) and so a whole host of physical abnormalities can arise.

These can reduce your strength, endurance, recovery capabilities, aerobic capacity, ability to metabolize fat and muscle growth. Alcohol can also affect your nervous system and brain.

I thought alcohol was a carbohydrate.

Alcohol isn't really anything, but it gets oxidized to acetaldehyde and then further to acetate, which is a key intermediate in most metabolic pathways I think, going on to pyruvate, etc. Those can be incorporated into fatty acid synthesis, but I don't think the body uses it for gluconeogenesis.

Next, we burn protein, then carbohydrates, then fat.

I find that interesting, I'm trying to lose weight and in the last 3 of 4 days, I gained 1.5 lbs with an intake of 1500-1700 calories. I've been using livestrong.com to help track my calorie intake and will have to check out the protein and carbohydrate intake. 18 lbs down, 37 to go...
