does age matter when it comes to getting a job?

All applications states that there will be no age discrimination, but then again, during the time of the interview, age and outer appearance will always have an effect I believe.

How old is too old when it comes to applying for a leadership job in a company?

currently, I am 25 years old. in 2010, I will possibly be leaving my job to pursue a full time MBA program. I'll be 27. by the time I graduate, I will either be just shy of 30 years old, or a bit older. At that time, I will be a 30 year old, trying to find a job in a big company. Do you guys think that this will be a disadvantage for me? If i'm going back to my prevous company, it probably wont matter, but im almost switching careers here. will companies prefer the fresh 23 to 26 year old person who just got out of college?

I'm confused. Why are you wanting a new job? Does it pay better or have more benefits?

The problem with the 20-something fresh-out-of-college kids is that many of the lack real work experience. Many have been coddled by mom, dad, teacher, and who-knows who else.

At 30 you are still young enough to be flexible, but presumably old enough to be somewhat responsible and able to figure out what is being asked of you.

This is all a generalization, of course, but I've seen it in action.

People don't care for age THAT much. The real concerns are how personable you are & whether or not you can do your job well. Most people don't fit even these... 🙂

60? I'm not joking by much. Experience would count in hiring someone initially as a manager.

But, if it is a management training program, then I'd presume they are looking for someone fresh out of school to work their *ss off. For that, I'd guess 30. There would be no discrimination in this case. You would be offered a position, but salary negotiations would go poorly.

When I was in orientation at my current employer, there was a guy there that was in his 70's. I can see why old people don't get hired, they had to keep waking him up...lulz.

Under 45 it's not discrimination anyway...or at least legally it's not.

Just wait until you're in your 50's with gray hair...you can have the best resume in the world...all they see is that gray hair and think, "Hmm, this guy will be retiring in just a few years, and his insurance costs will be 5 times as much as those of a 20-something's."
I'm there now, and do not look forward to trying to find a job once I graduate next year...

The only folks I know who discriminate against thirty year olds are professional sports and us old geezers. Thirty ain't old.

This. I work at a place where the median age is over 50 in my department. I'm 24, there's one guy that's 28, and then the next youngest guy is in his mid 40's. In my company being young is an asset. They give you a huge amount of training and they'd prefer to do it to a new guy who won't be retiring in a few years.

I?m 62 an plan on (retiring) leaving my company at the end of the year. I?m going to continue working, doing what I like to do, for a number of years for other companies and possibly consult for my old company as well. What age discrimination are you talking about?

BTW, I?m funding my own insurance and don?t plan on accessing social security until 67 or later.

Who the hell is looking for a 23 to 26 year old unless it'a an entry level position? It all comes down to experience unless you're trying to get into a company's training program (management/analyst/etc). And then they'll be looking for where you went to school.

The question for you - are you willing to take an entry level salary after getting your MBA to switch careers?
