Does a sergeant have to salute the President?

I'm going to make this REAL simple. I don't care if you HATE the President of the US, or you don't agree with his policies or have some other bullsh!t issue with him. If you are in the military, you WILL salute him, no if, ands, or buts! If you have a problem with that, get the fvck out of the military. I'm not a Bush supporter, but if I was in the military, I would salute him! WTF is wrong with you retards?

President is the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Military, you are required to salute him (though they don't have to turn and face him). I, personally, would not, as he most likely has never stepped foot on the battle field.

If you were on active duty in the U.S. military you would salute the President. It doesn't matter who he is or if you agree with what he does, you will salute.

I would never salute a politician, regardless of the consequences. Of course, I would never join an army run by politicians either.

If you were in the army you would salute, simple as that, you might not do it the first time, but I'll be the second time you would. You might not like what they do, but you should still show them respect, I agree with very little of what the Bush's do (I live in florida) but when I see the governor I give him respect. (He plays golf at our club from time to time)

i disagree with that, why do they deserve your respect? just because they're president or governor? respect is merit-based, not title-based. the fact that you would salute them a second time is not an acknowledgement of respect, it's an acknowledgement that you'll get your ass kicked if you don't.

It's respect for the position, not the person.

It's been said before... and I will say it again... Saluting is respect for the rank/position, not necesarily the person.

but doesn't he have military powers, only in time of war?

Nope. The President is the undisputed Commander in Chief in peace as well as war. The constitution does not grant him any more or less powers during peace or war.

Exactly. Ive saluted thousands of times during my military service, however only respected a few.

Would you salute a general who also has never stepped foot on the battlefield?

Most generals either were once normal soldiers, or had to go through an officers training. Most of them didn't wimp out of service 'cause daddy was rich and important!'.

OH the misinformation that gets passed here.

The only time that the president is due a salute is when he salutes you first which normally only happens when you recieve the CMO.

So to answer your question you don't have to salute the president if he walks by you are however required to stand if he enters the room.
Talk about misinformation, lol. 😕

As a vet I can tell you, without a doubt, that the President gets a salute from every covered military member.

Exactly. Every covered soldier salutes the President. All enlisted salute officers, all officers salute their seniors, and everyone salutes the President. The President who is uncovered nods or greets since he is uncovered. Although recent presidents seem to be saluting back as has been stated.

What does the Army do? I know Marines do not salute without a cover (without some sort of headgear on), but i've noticed the Army salutes indoors and sometimes uncovered. Does this mean that if CinC walks into a room full of soldiers and Marines that half the group salutes him and half just jumps to attention?

I find this topic kind of humorous, actually. Does the OP really think that everytime the Marine in dress blues salutes the president as he's boarding an aircraft, that he's doing it because he just feels like saluting on that day?

Army personnel only salute indoors/uncovered in special circumstances, such as reporting to an officer or a board (e.g. a promotion board), or during ceremony like a change of command where a salute is traditionally rendered but is being held indoors for whatever reason (generally inclimate weather).

President -> Secretary of Defense -> commanding General of a unit. This is the executive chain of command.

And as was said before, you salute the rank and position, not the man. The same reason why guards on post will salute the vehicle of an officer, no matter who is driving.

Also, isn't this exactly what Major Winters said to Captain Sobel (sp?) in one of th last episodes of Band of Brothers? 😀

In a movie, therefore: true. 😀😉

Freedom is doing what you don't want to do.
Respect is giving it sometimes where it isnt due.

Our military is based upon the principles of honor, loyalty, and code. We follow these things because we are the greatest country in the world, and we sure as hell better act like it.

You salute him because he is the President of the United States. If he walks into a room and is standing, you stand. If you are in the military, you will salute him. Sometimes as a soldier you have to do things, you don't like to do, hell you don't feel good doing. But you do it anyways.

Respect is not neccessarily for you to give. I do not personally like President George W. Bush, but I will always respect him. Why? Because at least over a hundred million Americans associated him with their ideals and values. He represents Americans. And unfortunately sometimes he represents America.

If I was a private, and I did not particularily associate my self the way you treated other privates and I did not salute you in front of your commanding officer how would you feel?

Do members of different branches of the military need to salute each other?

Yes. You salute the same ranks or equivilant ranks in other services that you would in your own.
