heres the example:

young sergeant, passes President, refuse to salute him. presidnet stops sergent and reprimands him for lack of military courtesy. sergeant replys that he's not obligate to salute President, because President is a civilian.
who is right? and where does it verify that answer in constitution? i think the 1st amendment?

the President is the Commander in Chief, the highest ranking military official.

President is the Commander-in-Chief of the United States Military, you are required to salute him (though they don't have to turn and face him). I, personally, would not, as he most likely has never stepped foot on the battle field.

Even 5 star Generals are required to salute the Commander in Chief, ie. the President of the United States.

A young sergeant who doesn't think he needs to salute his commander in chief, or any other officer, is in for a big surprise.

Would you salute a general who also has never stepped foot on the battlefield?

Most generals don't go into the actual battlefield, either...

As long as his pants are flying at half staff the salute is not necessary.

If you were on active duty in the U.S. military you would salute the President. It doesn't matter who he is or if you agree with what he does, you will salute.

I would never salute a politician, regardless of the consequences. Of course, I would never join an army run by politicians either.

Then you would never join any army in any country that has ever existed since time began. Every war has been instigated by politicians, not the military.

BTW, where did you get your degree in ignorance?

If you were in the army you would salute, simple as that, you might not do it the first time, but I'll be the second time you would. You might not like what they do, but you should still show them respect, I agree with very little of what the Bush's do (I live in florida) but when I see the governor I give him respect. (He plays golf at our club from time to time)

So you are all bluster... you opinion is as irrelevant as if you had said, "I would punch him in the face and kick him in the nuts while calling him a draft dodging baby killer. Sadly, I will never get the chance as I will not ever be in that position due to the fact that I would fail the physical for not having a spine..."

I so highly doubt that would ever happen, but besides that seems like somebody needs to take Government 101 or something.

Of course, resorting to insults seems to be the hallmark of this board. I recieved my PhD in Ignorance from IPU (Ignorant Peoples University).
I think that my point was that I would never join any army, lest it be for the immediate defense of the country I live in.

President Clinton never served in the military before becoming President, right? But he was Commander in Chief of the military, the highest ranking military officer, and thus technically in the military, while some veterans' eligible military campaigns were occuring. This would make him technically a veteran now...right?
