Does a faster HD load windows that much faster?

Hi, I have a drive (22XGP) of sustained max 18Mb/s transfer. The 75XGP does this at 37Mb/s. Big difference. So does windows load twice as fast then? Does this extra speed mean you can copy video in at higher resolution or quality as well?

For all it's worth, my 7200 Quantum Fireball Plus LM with its faster access time really does seem to load Windows 98 faster than its 5400rpm Quantum Fireball CR predecessor.

YES - my Maxtor D-Max Plus 20GB loads my windows at 1/4 of the time then my 1GB Seagate HDD - on the same PC ofcourse 😉

Speaking of hard drive speed, I'm surprised no RAID ppl jumped in here. I'm about to put an IDE RAID system together based on what I've read so far.

Yes Windows should load considerably faster with a 75GXP over your current drive, don't necessarily assume it will be exactly twice the speed however. In all likelyhood it will be more like 15-35% faster.

Rigoletto, I had a 22GXP and replaced it with a 75GXP and it was noticeably peppier but I don't think windows loaded twice as fast.

Hey seph, what are your specs? I just did some reading on the adaptec website and they quoted: Hardware raid speeds up boot times, but software doesn´t..Hmmm..

I want to change my system to a new HD and I will surely put my os
on the fastest drive, but is Software RAID THAT fast?

I need over a minute to boot my P3 700E with SCSI controller..

Given these real world results and the techspecs, I am much more in favour of the 40GV than the 75GXP but it is hard to find the 40GV at the moment.

people with nic cards that have to have dhcp enabled take longer, also, my scsi card has a little delay at startup, but i noticed much faster results with a 7200 rpm drive vs a 5400 rpm drive.

It depends on the density too. A 7200 will perform noticeably faster than a 5400 of the same density. As alluded to the inital boot takes a significant portion of the total time to actually get to the desktop and that is not going to improve. But then you would be crazy to spend more just to save a few seconds on the boot, the real savings comes in everything being faster once you are in the OS. Once I went IBM GXP I never went back. I have been using 'em exclusively for years now -fast, quiet, reliable ... what more do ya want? 😀

I if anyone can say that a faster HD does load windows faster, not only windows of course though, it makes the computer itself seem 150% faster in my case.. i went from a Western Digital 2 GB about a year ago as my primary HD! I put in the Fireball and was literally BLOWN AWAY! and I can say the HD's were setup EXACTLY the same because I used Norton Ghost to clone my old HD when I was installing the Quantum. When windows first booted up ( the very 1st time ) I almost pissed my pants, it was INFINITELY faster.. then again it was QUITE an increase in HD... but it does answer your question, it was pretty near twice as fast...

Thanks for that mental image. I almost pissed my pants when I read that you almost pissed your pants 😛

Why am I still awake?

It takes me about 17 sec to boot WinME also as VladTrishkin stated. My games load alot faster especially UT. UT loads in a matter of seconds compared to my old HD.

I have
2 IBM 75GXP 15gb HD in Raid 0
Duron 600@980
228mb pc-100
Abit KT-7 Raid

I have DHCP too!

I've got 2 75GXPs setup in RAID0 on a Promise FastTrak66, I didn't notice too much difference in the Windows load time (including the fact that I've got 2 NICs in the computer)... Do I have this thing setup wrong? What kind of scores are you guys with RAID0 getting in HDTach? (I can't get v2.61 working, so I'm stuck with v2.52)

I recently changed my bootdrive from an IDE IBM 75GXP to a SCSI Seagate Cheetah X15. Windows 2000 boot time difference is not noticeable.

We put together a pretty nifty RAID setup here just for the heck of it.
12 x 10k RPM drives in a Sun StoreEdge array, in one nice RAID 0 array.
Was pretty fast, but unfortunately the interface card was limited to 80 MB/sec which the array would constantly hit.

The best way to reduce start up times for microsoft operating systems is to install Windows2000. Reboots will be a thing of the past.

Since everyone seems to be agreeing that a faster drive is better, which drive would you all say would be best if I just wanted to spend around $150?
