Does a chipped core run hotter than an unchipped one?

I'm running a 1.4 tbird on an ABIT KT7A (no overclock) and I tried to change my HSF and noticed that I chipped the core.
Then I can't even run idle without getting heat shutdowns and freezes with any and all applications. Its running 45 C
idle and ambient temps are about 30 C. I applied a new thin layer of AS2 and have a Thermaltake Volcano 6cu+ fan runs
at 7000rpm. I tried to change it in the first place cause its so damn noisy in the first place. Any ideas?
 
Yes the chip will run hotter because the heat will not be properly distributed through the heatsink due to the chip in the core.
 
you're lucky if a chipped core works at all, and i think that that may be what's causeing your instability
while 45 isn't desirable, it shold still be functional
 
ive had several durons where the corner was slightly chipped and they all seemed to work perfectly (and nope they didnt run hot either)

the only reason i can think of that would make it run hotter would be that less of the surface is in contact with the hsf, but.... with a slight chip that would be negligable.

if its running to warm i would try reseating the hsf with just a very small layer of thermal compound
but if the core is really chipped up bad that could definatly account for your instablility (have you tried running prime95?)
 
no chance of me trying to run prime 95 as I can't even watch a DVD, burn a CD, play morrowind, benchmark using 3dmark2001
I just popped in a 1.2 and although its running just as hot, there is no instability.
 
I guess it's a heat issue nonetheless. That's b/c if the core itself was damaged (even very slightly) the chip wouldn't turn on at all. I guess you could apply more thermal compound, a thicker layer so that it would cover the chipped part and thus allow for it to dissipate heat.
 
What's your room and case temp like?

I've chipped many cpu's and have never noticed one running hotter because of it, but some did act like they were high. I think the biggest problem is the heatsink you are using, it isn't a good one for a heater like the 1.4 bird. If you don't have another I suggest either a Dr Thermal Ti-V77L (it's quiet, but be sure you get the "L" version) or an ax-7 with a 32-36cfm fan, and that should still be quiet.
