On a serious note, you can always move to a better place if your current one isnt looking for what you have.....

Just having a degree will help you out no matter what it is.

<--- Case in point. I have a criminal justice degree and am a database admin for the gov't. :)

It's not a waste of time. But if you are a freshman, I would suggest taking classes for other majors too.

I got a BS in Management from GA Tech, and while I am pleased with my degree, I realized too late in the college game that I should have at least considered a few other majors like Industrial or Mechanical Engineering, even though there are few differences between Tech's MGT and IE programs. I just came into college knowing what I wanted to do, MGT plus co-op, but I should have been more open to different options earlier on.

Also remember that your undergraduate degree does not determine your graduate degree nor your occupations in life. The VP of Delta e-Business had an undergrad degree in Biology and no Master's Degree, yet she was the most dynamic person I've ever worked for.

Not quite :p. I'm at the CDC in an office building pretty far from any labs.

There is NO undergraduate degree out there that alone guarantees you a stable career for a lifetime. OTOH, with almost any degree, if you're smart, flexible, adaptable AND you keep a variety of interests, you'll be able to earn your keep. Most people change careers and directions in their lives and no degree can prevent this.

Of course it's worth something. You think companies are just drooling to hire people with GEDs as engineers and financial managers?

I found this thread and am replying like you requested. You have some good replys already. Today's graduates face a much more uncertain future than did yesterday's grads. No major is a guarantee of success. What you are now seeing as a worthless degree is not the degree .... it is the economy. Business hiring always falls when the economy falls and picks up when the economy does. But, if you feel a business degree is not worth much, stop and think about most other majors. Most graduates with liberal arts degrees end up in some aspect of business because there aren't many jobs for history majors, English majors, psychology majors, etc ... not that they aren't great majors ... but they don't generate much in the way of revenues for a society. That's the role of business, and they will be the biggest employer for the foreseeable future. But, there are some areas that will continue to have strong demand for a long time ... at least in America (I see you are from Ontario and expect it is the same there) .. healthcare will be big and getting bigger. So will education, expecially at the post-secondary level, because many current profs are nearing retirement age and when they retire, there will be many openings. In our department, we have 9 facuty (I think, but it's late and am tired) and 6 will retire within the next 6 years or so. Skilled trades will grow and may pay more than many business or other jobs ....and so forth. Too much to go into this late. If I acn, I will look at your posts and try to give you better answers. Keep the faith. Bekker

CLEARLY, as proven by more anecdotal and statistical evidence than you can shake a stick at, a university degree is likely to benefit you a great deal and in all but rare cases will pay for itself in the long term. So, the question is will a business degree be worth having? I would say yes.

In this slumping economy, it's only good in that it shows your competency and dedication to go out and do something for 4 years. That is, unless it directly relates to your job, like the more technical disciplines such as engineering and CS.

What more do you want? Get a damned college degree. It's not like you're going to get very far in life with a high school diploma.

I donno about that... my wife had a BS in nursing and pulled $35 an hour when she worked... My oldest brother has a BS in pharmacy and pulls $50 an hour. It's pretty guarnteed. You can quit one day and be hired the next AFAIK..

The biggest problem is you really never go up/

What's your point? Those fields have no demand and only those with juice and/or exceptional skill get jobs.

Unless your a Bill Gates certified evil genius, get a college degree. The job market isn't like it was in the 90s when companies were hiring people so long as they had a pulse but it isn't god-awful either. Major in something useful like Business, CS, or something and minor in something else. If you don't think the job prospects are that good with your degree go get a Master's degree. You'll really see increased chances.

My best friend got a Bachelor's degree in Management and didn't like the jobs that were out there when he graduated so he went back and got his Master's in Marketing. He's now on the fast track at Hartford Life and is living it up in Charlotte, NC. Of course, he's a freak on the evil genius level but that is another story. :)
