when (if ever) did Dell begin to use standard ATX PSUs?

and

when (if ever) did Dell begin to use standard micro-ATX motherboards with standard connectors?

Well, the problem with that is that I have noticed that even if they are using standard pinouts, they use non-standard colors. So, for example... yellow is white. So, all the molex connectors in the system (if any) will be white, black, black, red instead of yellow, black, black, red.

They may also have done the same with the 24pin ATX connector. The only real way to test nondestructively would be to check with a multi-meter.

inspiron 530 full size does. its a sparkle 350w last time i checked.

very normal power supply actually.

AFAIK, Dell has been using standard ATX PSUs in their computers since the Dimension 4500 and 8400 days (late 2003 on), though in those days, many of the computers had a back plate over the PSU that would need to be cut to put a standard ATX supply in (because of the switch).

It's probably cheaper for them to get standard power supplies to install in their systems instead of getting more proprietary parts.

In the old days the PSUs had standard connectors. Problem was while it did use a 24 pin main connector its orientation of the wires in that connector where different from the ATX standard.

so.. IF my Dell's power supply has these different orientation of wires, and i DO replace it with my standard FSP Epsilon power supply, with bad things happen?

Bad things will happen if your Dell PSU has a non-standard pinout.

Bad things like 12V going where 3.3V needs to be.

As I said, the most secure way to absolutely make sure is to use a multi-meter.
